Maine DMR Public Health

DMR Announces the Following:

The Shellfish Advisory Council has called for a special set meeting to discuss the summery report that was generated by the Municipal Shellfish Management meetings this past May.

The DMR Bureau of Public Health invites you to attend this meeting on July 20, 2022. We will start promptly at 3:30 PM and finish at approximately 5:00 PM. This meeting will be conducted virtually via Microsoft Teams.

In addition, the Shellfish Advisory Council is seeking nominations for two vacant positions. These positions must meet the specifications found in Title 12 Sec 6038.

  1. Shellfish Aquaculture lease Holder (Western Maine Rep)
  2. Shellfish Aquaculture lease Holder (Eastern Maine Rep)

To make a nomination, please email DMRPublicHealthDiv@maine.gov and include the name, phone number, email address of the nominated party, a brief description of why they are a good candidate and their willingness to serve on the council. Nominations should be received before July 15 and will be considered at the next ShAC meeting on July 20.


The purpose of the Shellfish Advisory Council is to make a recommendation to the commissioner and the joint standing committee of the Legislature having jurisdiction over marine resources matters concerning:

  1. How best to utilize state agencies, municipal governments, the shellfish industry, and citizen groups to make improvements to and maintain the quality of the State's coastal waters and to expedite the opening of closed shellfish flats; and
  2. Matters of interest to the State's shellfish industry, including, but not limited to, shellfish resource management, public health protection, and the activities and recommendations of a multistate organization that promotes shellfish sanitation.

The Shellfish Advisory Council generally meets quarterly. Members are compensated for mileage and receive a small meal per diem.  For more details concerning term period, meetings, officer positions, and compensation please consult Title 12 Sec 6038.
