US Army Corps of Engineers Notice

Saco River Dredging Project in Biddeford and Saco, Maine

The New England District of the US Army Corps of Engineers recently awarded a contract to dredge the channel and anchorages of the Saco River Federal Navigation Project (FNP) in Biddeford and Saco, Maine (Attachment 1).  Please take notice that dredging operations will commence on or about December 15, 2018 and end by March 31, 2018.  The work involves dredging approximately 115,000 cubic yards (cy) of sand (80,000 cy in lower reaches and 35,000 cy in upper reaches) from an area of roughly 77 acres in the river (Attachments 2 & 3) to restore the FNP to authorized dimensions (-8 eight feet in channels and -6 feet below MLLW in anchorages) plus 1 foot overdepth which may be dredged.

Included with this notice is a link to a map specifying the Haul Route to be used by the mechanical dredging contractor transiting to and from the in-river dredged material placement site.  In the lower portion of the river, shoal material will be hydraulically dredged and piped over the jetty for direct placement onto Camp Ellis Beach.  A general newspaper announcement will also be issued, pointing to the Corps' web page where the haul route map is posted:

All fishing gear must be removed from 200 feet either side of the specified haul route centerline to avoid damage to or loss of fishing gear due to dredged material disposal operations.

Individuals seeking additional information regarding this project or having inquiries regarding the loss of fishing gear suspected to be the result of dredged material disposal may contact Mr. Craig Martin, the Corps Project Manager, at (978) 318-8638.

Please feel free to share this information with any and all individuals who might have an interest in the haul route being used by the Corps' dredging contractor.
