The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is beginning a process to revise Maine’s Bottle Bill Program rules. Before DEP starts the formal rule-making process, we are providing interested parties the opportunity to review, discuss with staff, and comment on possible changes. You can provide DEP with your input in writing, or in person at meetings we will be holding around the state.
Bottle Bill rules discussion - meeting schedule:
- Tuesday, July 19th, 9:00 a.m. DEP Southern Maine Regional Office, 312 Canco Road, Portland (207-822-6300)
- Wednesday, July 20th, 1:00 p.m., DEP Eastern Maine Regional Office, 106 Hogan Road, Bangor (207-9451-4570)
- Thursday, July 21st, 8:30 a.m., DEP Northern Maine Regional Office, 1235 Central Drive, Presque Isle (207-764-0477)
- Tuesday, July 26th, 1:00 p.m., DEP Central Maine Regional Office Response Building, 4 Blossom Lane, Augusta (207-287-7688)
DEP staff has created a working draft that shows changes to Chapter 360 that we are considering and seek your feedback on. In general, the changes are in four areas:
- Updates to citations consistent with the transfer of statutory authority for the program from DACF to DEP;
- Clarification of responsibilities related to initiation of deposit and label registrations consistent with statute;
- Addition of provisions from the statute (e.g., prohibitions) which the regulated community are responsible for implementing; and
- General “clean-up” of the rule, e.g., removal of duplicative provisions, consistent use of terminology, integration of standards from DACF redemption center inspection form currently “incorporated herein by reference”, some minor reorganization of existing provisions.
