 Hidden
Valley Nature Center, located on the Egypt Road in Jefferson, is hosting a
demonstration of an innovative Swedish low-impact forwarder. Multitek, a
Wisconsin based manufacturer and distributor of forestry equipment, has made a
Vimek 606TT Forwarder available to Hidden Valley Nature Center (HVNC) to use
and demonstrate. This Swedish machine is a smaller, lighter, and more
economical version of forwarders generally used by logging contractors in the
US. The Vimek is highly maneuverable and well suited to low-impact forestry
operations where the landowner wants to minimize soil disturbance, keep roads
narrow, and avoid damage to remaining trees. Tracy Moskovitz, HVNC co-founder,
has been using the forwarder for several weeks. “We visited a large forestry
exhibition in Sweden and were impressed with a wide range of small and
mid-scale forestry equipment that is very suitable to Maine but generally not
available in the US. It’s great that Vimek is interested in Maine. The 27 hp
Kubota engine is incredibly efficient and the 6-wheel drive means I can easily
maneuver on our hilly terrain.”
The
demonstration will be held at Hidden Valley Nature
Center on Saturday, January 17th from noon till 2:00pm.
Participants will be able to see and operate the machine.
Hidden
Valley Nature Center was the 2014 Outstanding Tree Farmers for Maine and the 12
state Northeast region. The event is co-sponsored by the Maine Organic and
Farmers and Gardeners Association’s (MOFGA) Low Impact Forestry Program.

Northeast
Woody/Warm-Season Biomass Consortium Webinar: Torrefaction - Production,
Technology, and Co-firing Economics, January 13, 1 p.m. ET.
Tune in to this webinar for an inside look at Terra Green Energy, LLC, and a
discussion about its central process: torrefaction--how it works, why the
process should be considered, what advantages it introduces to biomass
handling, and the key characteristics of torrefied material. The presentation
will also address torrefaction feedstocks as well as current challenges and
next steps for the industry with a special look at the economics involved when
co-firing torrefied biomass thereby displacing a portion of coal at an
electrical generation facility. Presented by Tom Causer, President and COO,
Terra Green Energy, LLC. https://meeting.psu.edu/bioenergy
