Specialty Crop Block Grant Information Session and Application Deadline Reminder

There is still time to register for an online information session to learn more about the 2027 Specialty Crop Block Grant Program (SCBGP) Phase I Grant.

Please review the Request for Applications (RFA) and all related documents on the program website before applying.

Application Deadline: October 30, 2026, no later than noon 12:00 p.m. ET.

Information Session: An online information session will be hosted through Zoom on the following date and time:

  • Wednesday, October 14, 2026, 9:00 a.m. ET - Register

Grant Purpose: The Specialty Crops Competitiveness Act of 2004 (7 U.S.C. 1621 note) authorized the USDA to provide grants to State departments of agriculture to enhance the competitiveness of specialty crops. The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry is eligible to submit a State Plan for these funds. The State Plan will include projects that have successfully completed both Phase I and Phase II of the RFA process. These projects will be recommended for awards. The recommendation does not guarantee funding. The USDA has final approval of what projects will be funded.

Eligibility to Apply: Any entity may apply if the proposed project benefits Maine’s specialty crop(s) and aligns with program requirements, including funding restrictions. Applicants must describe how the project will benefit and produce measurable outcomes for a Maine specialty crop sector(s) rather than a single business, organization, or individual. Projects that primarily benefit a single business or that business’s product, organization, or individual will not be funded.

Funding Available:

  • DACF anticipates awarding 1-6 grants and up to $600,000 through this RFA process.
  • Funding requests must exceed $14,999.99 and may not exceed $100,000.00.
  • DACF may award all or some of the available funding through this RFA process and may make multiple awards.
  • There is the possibility that the USDA will require a 25% matching contribution requirement. More information will be given prior to Phase II.

Award Range: Award ranges will be between $15,000 and $100,000 per selected recipient.

Important Information: This RFA is intended to support projects that strengthen Maine’s specialty crop sector, expand opportunities for Maine producers, and contribute to a more resilient and competitive food system. The program prioritizes projects that advance Maine specialty crop consumption, production, market development, resiliency, workforce capacity, and/or supply chain infrastructure.
