Message From Open Farm Day Organizer

Happy spring to all!

If you're a farm who plans to participate or needs a refresher about the event, or simply an Open Farm Day cheerleader, I invite you to read on to learn more about celebrating this tradition with us in 2026!

I've had many conversations with farmers who are eager to greet visitors to their farms on Open Farm Day happening Sunday, July 26, 2026 (some farms will be open Saturday, July 25, 2026, too).

Farms are busy in the springtime rhythms of farming. Their work varies. Many are tending delicate seedlings, monitoring greenhouse temperatures and rain amounts. They're keeping an eye on the weather and the to-list. Some with animals are fencing pastures and estimating feed needs for the wintry months. Many have welcomed new herd and flock members. In the best of situations, it's with renewed awe. In the worst, it's with bittersweet heartache.

They check the tools and equipment and get input from each other. Of course, they're doing a lot of other nitty-gritty tasks; some a bit more mundane than others. They order supplies, do paperwork, and check another item off the to-do list. Many farms are making, processing, and packing products for customers. All while doing quality checks between.

I could write a lot about the people I've met and the things I've learned while helping to organize Maine's Open Farm Day. But what's better is that you can experience it, too, firsthand.

Each July, farmers open their doors to the public. This is a special chance to get to know these businesses and families, and what they do season to season, to support local agriculture. There's plenty of variety to explore.

Sincerely, Anne
