Bee on the Lookout! Bumble Bee Survey

Orange-belted bumblebee photographed by Jocelyn Hubbell.

The common statewide and abundant Orange Belted or Tricolored Bumblebee. Photo by Jocelyn Hubbell.

I snapped a shot of the common Orange Belted (AKA Tricolored) Bumble Bee recently in my garden. It is the most likely bumble bee to see, with rusty orange on its abdomen. I was looking for another bee to help with the current effort to document the Rusty Patched Bumble Bee in Maine, which has declined by 90% since the 1990s and is the first bee to be protected by the Endangered Species Act. View photos at the Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife website and learn how you can help too.

Thank you for bee watching!
