Maine Chapter Association of Consulting Foresters Annual Spring Field Meeting - Standish

Date:

Thursday, May 25, 2023

Time:

2 PM-5 PM

Location:

Neal Dow Lot, 511 Cape Road, Standish Maine 04084

Topic:

Skidder Trail Lay Out & Marking.

When marking trees for harvest – do you lay out skidder trails? Some foresters do, some don’t.

Rene Noel will discuss the system for marking timber he has developed over his career.

In its simplest form, marking timber is about selecting trees to be harvested. But it is so much more than that. It is about practicing good silviculture and communicating with the logger cutting the wood. And like any good communication system, what isn’t “said” is just as important as what is “said” to the logger through the paint gun.

Come enjoy a walk in the woods and look at two lots in short proximity. These lots belong to Neal Dow and have been under Southern Maine Forestry Management for several cutting cycles. One lot was cut last year, the other several years ago.

The third lot is a new client. It was last harvested to salvage wind throw about twenty years ago. Rene will have some paint out on the new lot, and we can compare the cutting done on the adjacent lots.
