New Maine Geologic Fact and Locality Available

The Maine Geological Survey (MGS) is pleased to announce the latest Maine Geologic Fact and Locality (GFL) release:  Bedrock, Glaciers, and People at Harriman Point, Brooklin, Maine. Come explore a beautiful property on the Maine coast with students from the University of Maine's Fall 2021 Research-Learning Experience pilot course, Sharing Geoscience on Maine’s Public Lands, taught by Professor Christopher Gerbi. This course was one of several designed to engage first- and second-year undergraduates in experiential education, supported in part by a generous donation from the Harold Alfond Foundation as part of UMS TRANSFORMS.

The Harriman Point property has easy trail access to explore bedrock and surficial geologic features described by the students.  Evidence of volcanic eruptions, continents moving, oceans and mountains forming, and glaciers advancing and retreating is chronicled. Even recent history is on display at the cellar hole of the former Harriman homestead.
