Banned Water Plants Pose Headache for Aquatic Plant Sellers

Parrot feather

Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry together with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) want to remind plant sellers about Maine's invasive aquatic plant law.

They're illegal
Maine prohibits possession, sales, importation, cultivation, transportation or distribution of any whole or part of 11 invasive aquatic plant listed by Maine law.

They may often be hidden in plain sight
Many banned water plants appear nearly identical to non-invasive ones.  Find pictures and information on reporting a suspicious plant on DEP's invasive plant website.

They're sneaky
Illegal plants can ship with legal plants or be called other names. Use the scientific and alternative names list to check your orders carefully (see below).

There can be penalties
It makes sense to double check your inventory and orders and if unsure ask for help.
