News and Information
The Maine Geological Survey (MGS) is pleased to announce the release of the latest Maine Geologic Fact and Locality (GFL): Mars Hill Conglomerate. This topic came from a reader suggestion earlier this year.
Mars Hill is a prominent geographic feature in eastern Aroostook County rising from the rolling, open fields of the area. It hosts a ski area, a segment of the International Appalachian Trail, and a commercial wind farm. It is also famous in the geology community for a unique, Paleozoic conglomerate formation that puzzled geologists for years. Dr. Chunzeng Wang from the University of Maine at Presque Isle used the opportunity afforded by the excavation of Mars Hill for the wind farm to examine the geology more closely. He takes us on a 5-stop walking tour of Mars Hill to share the new bedrock exposures and what he's been able to decipher about the regional geology.
