Geologists Report on the State of Maine’s Beaches

beach flooding

On Friday, June 14, the Maine Geological Survey (MGS) released two new reports on Maine’s beaches. The State of Maine’s Beaches in 2019 (O-F-19-3; Slovinsky et al., 2019) and 2019 Beaches Conference:  Maine Beach Profiling Program Posters (O-F-19-4; Corney et al., 2019) provide information on beach width, erosion and accretion, and effects of winter storms. This biannual report and posters from MGS marine geologists look back to the 2007 Patriots’ Day Storm and track dune and beach changes through a period of sea level fluctuations and powerful storms up to the spring of 2019. New metrics are used to examine trends in dune erosion, beach width, elevation, and slope over more than a decade. Results are shown in maps and graphs specific to sites along the beach shoreline. Data collected by volunteer citizen scientists for the Maine Beach Profiling Program is integrated with the MGS Maine Beach Mapping Program to provide a comprehensive spatial and temporal look at beaches from Kittery to Pemaquid. Together, both new reports summarize conditions of beaches in the last two years in relation to state averages.

This report and posters were released on June 14, 2019 at the 2019 Beaches Conference held in Kittery. These results were made possible through a collaboration with the Maine Coastal Program, Maine Sea Grant, Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve, and more than a dozen teams of volunteers.
