Islesboro forests currently face many challenges: severe weather felling entire acres of same-aged trees, understory trees having difficulty regenerating due to deer over-browse and competition with other aggressive plant species, such as Japanese Barberry and Bittersweet, as well as a warming climate enabling the infestation of various tree-harming insects and diseases.
What can we do to help manage our beloved woods and forests and assist them in maintaining health and vitality? Join IIT with experts Morten Moesswilde and Aleta McKeage to learn more.

Project Learning Tree and the China School Forest are hosting a nature-based field day for Brownie and Junior Girl Scouts on May 18. We need volunteer presenters to teach girls (ages 7-11) about insects, animal habitats and trees. The day will include tree identification, tree life cycles, a pond macro invertebrate study, decomposers, and microhabitats focusing on trees. We are still organizing the day but are looking at 3 rotations of about 50 minutes each. We have some teaching materials/equipment and lesson outlines for the activities but presenters are free to add their own individual adaptations to the lessons. The day runs from 10am-3pm but if you can only give 1/2 day, that’s fine, too. FMI or to volunteer contact Anita Smith at Chinaschoolsforest@gmail.com or Sarah Medina smedina@sevenislands.com.
