News and Information
The Maine Geological Survey (MGS) is pleased to announce the release of the latest Maine Geologic Fact and Locality (GFL): Geology of Mount Kineo State Park, Kineo Township, Maine. This month's GFL author Lindsay Spigel, Surficial Geologist, takes us to one of Maine's most dramatic features to describe the geologic processes that created it. You will learn about how glaciers shaped Mount Kineo, why the rock, Kineo rhyolite, was so important to indigenous people and how popular French wigs from the 1700's styled with sheep fat are linked to Maine geology! Great hiking descriptions and stunning views of Moosehead Lake are an added bonus.
For an interactive web map and listing of all previously published GFLs please visit MGS Geologic Facts and Localities.
