These two-day, hands-on workshops will introduce stream survey
techniques and concepts associated with ecologically sound road/stream
crossings. Stream Smart (Phase II) is intended to provide information that will
enable participants to gather and analyze field data relative to ecological
objectives (i.e. fish passage and connected stream processes) when designing
replacement structures at stream crossings. The Stream Smart Phase II workshops
will take place on:
- October 16-17 at Maine Audubon
Fields Pond Sanctuary, Holden Maine
- October 23-24 at the Lakes
Environmental Association, Bridgton, Maine
Workshop participants are expected to have some stream survey
experience and work directly on road projects in such positions as forestry
manager, municipal public works manager, civil engineer, surveyor, or natural
resource agency staff. The October 16-17 workshop will have an optional 1-hour
refresher on field survey techniques at 8am on Day 1.

Participants in this workshop can also receive
recertification credit for the Maine Department of Environmental Protection,
Voluntary Contractor Certification Program and may be eligible for Forester or
Engineering Continuing Education Units (CEUs). Attendance at both days of
the workshop is required.

The standard operating procedure for years has been to
keep wood out of streams, especially when logging. However, when properly
placed, wood
in streams has some real ecological benefits.
Two 2-day, hands-on workshops are planned for loggers,
foresters, and anyone else interested in stream restoration as a business
practice. PLP credits are available for loggers and SAF credits for foresters.

Join Maine Forest Service (MFS) district forester Morten Moesswilde and Knox-Lincoln Soil & Water program manager Hildy Ellis for the ninth in a series of free, monthly Small-Scale Woodland Stewardship Tours in Knox and Lincoln counties. The focus of this month’s tour is the impact and management of hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA), an invasive forest pest that attacks and ultimately kills eastern hemlock trees. The tour will be held on Thursday, October 18 from 2-4pm at the woodlot of John Welsh on the Dover Rd in Boothbay. Moesswilde and Ellis will be joined by Welsh, his forester Dave Schaible, and MFS forest entomologist Colleen Teerling, who works on research and management of HWA and other invasive forest pests in Maine.
These free tours are held rain or shine - please dress for the elements and ground conditions. Participants are asked to meet at 2pm at the Welsh property, 142 Dover Rd, Boothbay, ME. The Maine Land Use Planning Commission launched our updated Zoning and Parcel viewer July 2018 and
several issues were reported. One was the extended period of time to query data
and the other was the inability to print a map with zoning. Both issues
have been resolved and there is no longer any wait time for the user to query
town, and tax plan and lot information. The printing issue has also been
resolved so the LUPC zoning will now display on a printed PDF map. Please

Improved features in this tool vs. the old one:
- Aerial imagery is now available
- Topographic information is now
available
- Can download the official and
small scale zoning map from the sortable table
- Easier to maneuver around the
map
- There is now a measuring tool
for length and area
- It contains characteristics of
the zone area
- There is more information about
the parcels, especially acreage
- Can download a ESRI shape file
and metadata and a .kmz file for Google Earth
What was fixed:
- You can now print a map that
displays the zoning symbology
- The query will now quickly
allow the user to enter in a town name and appropriate tax plan and lot
information.
