Village Road across from the Downs Road. Please park on the north side of the
less trafficked Downs Road.

Themes
include:
irregular shelterwood silviculture; effect of forest conditions and
the harvest on forest bird populations; understory beech and fir control;
enrichment planting of white pine and red oak (including tree shelters); use of
Kubota 1120D side-by-side for forestry and logging work; crop-tree release of
immature northern hardwoods and white pine; silviculture of large-diameter
white pine; supporting ecological diversity including rare eastern
leatherwood/wicopy (Dirca palustris).
Audience:
Saturday is targeted for landowners. A tour for foresters will be held on
Friday, August 24th from 8:30AM-3:00PM. Similar themes with a more strenuous
hike through the woods and technical jargon. The forester tour will meet at the
North Road landing, located 0.8 miles east of the Sebec Village Road. Email jessica.leahy@maine.edu for more

Workshop Description:
The Managing Oak and
White Pine Forests in Maine workshop will highlight the commercial market
status and potential markets, forest insect and diseases issues, wildlife
habitat values, basic silviculture, and management of oak and pine trees and
forests in Maine. Speakers including Bill Leak,
Mariko Yamasaki and others from the USDA Forest Service; Jack Witham,
University of Maine; Aaron Bergdahl, Maine Forest Service; Paul Larrivee, Sappi
Fine Paper, and Pat Sirois, Maine SFI, will cover a range of topics from the
growing of to the marketing of oak and pine trees in Maine. The workshop is
sponsored by the Maine Forest Service, Maine Tree Foundation, UMaine - Holt
Research Forest, Maine Woodland Owners, and the Maine Sustainable Forestry
Initiative. It has been designed for foresters as well as family woodland
owners.
The Managing Oak and White Pine Forests in Maine workshop will start with
a brief overview of the Holt Research forest, oak silviculture, oak and pine
diseases, current markets, and oak-pine forests as wildlife habitat, followed
by walk and discussion in the woods.
Thanks to generous support from Maine Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI),
there is no charge for this workshop.
Continuing Education Credits:
