 The Maine Geological Survey (MGS) is pleased to announce the release of the latest Maine Geologic Fact and Locality (GFL): Ocean crust, fossils, and an unconformity: Bedrock Geology of Ripogenus Dam. This month's GFL author Ian Hillenbrand, a former MGS intern, takes us to a northern Maine site that is an engineering and geologic marvel. Ripogenus Dam, at the head of Ripogenus Gorge on the West Branch of the Penobscot River impounds the largest reservoir ever built with private funding. It also exposes ancient rocks that were part of a mid-ocean ridge that contain corral fossils.
