On Wednesday, February 21 from 1:00 - 3:00pm, Knox-Lincoln and Waldo County Soil & Water Conservation Districts (SWCDs), in cooperation with the Belfast Field Office of the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), will host a meeting of the Local Working Group for Knox and Waldo counties at the Searsmont Town Office, 37 Main St. South, Searsmont.

This group will make recommendations to NRCS on how to spend local USDA Farm Bill funds for conservation practices on private lands in FY 2019.

If you are an agricultural producer; forester, logger or private woodland owner; member of an environmental or watershed organization or land trust; knowledgeable in soil, water, plant, wetland or wildlife sciences; and/or are familiar with agricultural and natural resource concerns in Knox or Waldo counties, we invite you to attend this meeting to help 1) identify and prioritize conservation concerns in our district; and 2) recommend how local funds for USDA conservation programs will be distributed.

Maple Syrup Production for Beginners – South Paris

The Maple Syrup Production for Beginners workshop is for those who would like to learn what it takes to produce a little maple syrup for family use. This is the first in a series of late winter/spring workshops sponsored by Oxford County Soil & Water Conservation District. Whether you’d like to tap a couple of trees or a dozen, this demonstration will help you get started. Jim Record of Jim Record and Son Real Maine Maple Syrup will give a hands-on presentation of the basics of identifying trees, tapping trees and making syrup, and what equipment is needed. The workshop will be held at the Oxford County Extension Office from 9-11 am on February 24th with a follow-up invitation for a guided tour of the Jim’s saphouse on March 25th during Maine Maple Sunday or whenever the saphouse is in operation during the upcoming season. 10.00 per family workshop fee covers demonstration, snacks and written materials. Chainsaw Maintenance and Filing - Farmington

This training is geared for the part time chainsaw operator,  to get more confident on chainsaw service and maintenance.  This evening clinic will cover chainsaw operator maintenance, filing, and servicing to include; fuels, lubricants, trouble shooting, tools, bar and chain maintenance, and filing. Please bring your own saw and tools if you want to work on it, but not required.  Instructor Pete Tracy will also furnish tools.  This workshop will be held at the Forestry/Wood Harvesting shop in the Foster Technology Center at the Mt. Blue Campus, Farmington (second entrance to the High School off the Seamon Road).   Hosted by the Upper Kennebec Valley Chapter of Maine Woodland Owners.  Questions call Patty Cormier at 592-2238 or email: patty.cormier@maine.gov.  This is free and open to all!

By attending this session, you qualify to become DEP certified in erosion and sediment control practices after the completion of a site evaluation. You will also learn about new state-of-the-art erosion control techniques and ways to save time and money on your construction projects as well as become eligible for discounts, expedited DEP permitting and other free educational resources.
