Trees vs. Salt

road salt

Each year, winter brings cold weather, snow, ice, and dormancy to our trees. Insect and disease pests are dead or dormant for the season. In the winter, a larger threat to dormant trees emerges. It attacks healthy trees as well as sick trees, large trees as well as small ones. This winter time threat? De-icing salt. So: does safe salt for trees exist? Read more…

8 things to know about the winter solstice

solstice sun

“A day without sunshine is like, you know, night,” quipped Steve Martin — and indeed, even a day with less sunshine can feel a bit dark. Our world depends on the light radiating from that big star we traipse around, and when it's in short supply, we feel it. But if you count yourself among those who don’t love waking up before the sun rises and getting off work after it has set, things are about to lighten up. Hello, winter solstice!

Although winter is really just beginning, we can at least say goodbye to these short little days we’ve been suffering (and don’t let the door hit you on the way out). With that in mind, here’s a collection of curious facts to celebrate the long-awaited return to longer days. Read more…

The Problems Associated With Tree Surrounds

As a responsible tree care provider, it’s important to let your clients know that a tree surround, or ring, is bad landscaping and poor tree care.

You see them in just about every part of the country — I know that I’ve seen them in each of the 40 states I’ve been to. Tree surrounds, or tree rings, are just an odd and head-scratching item in the arboricultural world. You see all types and varieties: Read more…

Technical Assistance for Connecting Children to Nature

REQUEST FOR APPLICATIONS – Due January 31, 2017

Opportunity and Background

Over the last few decades, childhood has moved indoors, leaving too many kids disconnected from the natural world. This trend has profound consequences which include high rates of obesity, diabetes, stress and depression in children — all of which disproportionately affect low-income populations and children of color. Benefits of access to nature include:

• Improved health outcomes

• Higher academic achievement

• Enhanced social and emotional learning

• Stronger social connections

• Increased creativity, self-esteem and focus

• A greater sense of environmental stewardship

The Cities Connecting Children to Nature (CCCN) initiative offers local officials guidance and support to establish more equitable connections between children and nature, through technical assistance, training on promising practices, and peer learning opportunities. Beginning in 2018, CCCN will engage a new cohort of cities committed to taking up high-impact strategies such as green schoolyards, early childhood nature play, and increasing use of parks. This effort builds on early gains achieved in seven pilot cities whose engagement began in 2015.
