Fall Colors Appearing throughout Northern Maine
Augusta, ME (September 20, 2017) - With autumn officially arriving on Friday, the Fall Foliage Report from the Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry reports moderate color emerging in northern Maine (30-50 percent). Forest Rangers report low color (10-30 percent) for the rest of the state.
Typically, northern Maine (zones 6 and 7) reaches peak conditions the last week of September into the first week of October. The rest of the state’s progression of color will start occurring from north to south in mid-October. Coastal Maine typically reaches peak conditions mid-to-late October.
“We have had summer-like weather leading up to the beginning of the fall foliage season; however, we’re still on track for a typical season. As our weather takes a more seasonal turn, colors will start moving toward peak conditions in early to mid-October,” according to Gale Ross, fall foliage spokesperson.
Kick off the first official weekend in fall with one of the many events taking place throughout Maine. Head Downeast for the 9th Annual Acadia Night Sky Festival to witness the region’s star-studded skies from September 21-24. For those interested in rural, sustainable living, the Common Ground Country Fair from September 22-24 will provide exhibits and displays on agriculture, fibers, livestock, energy, healing and more. Wrap up the weekend on Sunday with the Pemaquid Oyster Festival with fresh seafood, entertainment and fun.
Enjoy fall foliage touring in the Maine Highlands by driving to Bangor to explore Cascade Park. From there, drive only an hour and a half to Maine’s largest lake, Moosehead, in Greenville. Experience fall colors from the lake aboard the 1914 steamboat, the Katahdin. For spectacular views for hikers and other outdoor adventurers, take on one or more of the Moosehead Pinnacle Pursuit’s six peaks. While traveling this area that is true to its name, be sure keep your eyes ready to spot a magnificent moose amongst the brilliant leaves.
