Camp Road Workshop - Belgrade Lakes

BRCA, Maine Alliance for Road Associations (MARA), Friends of the Cobbossee Watershed, and 30 Mile River Watershed Association are hosting a Camp Road Maintenance Workshop.

This workshop will discuss road design, installation, and how maintenance of your camp road will save you money and protect water quality.

The workshop will also cover legal issues related to forming and operating a road association, including new changes in Maine law.

Camp Road Residents, Lake Association members, Contractors, Road Commissioners, Select Boards, Public Works Supervisors, CEOs and others involved in road maintenance are invited to attend.

Forestry for Maine Birds - Bridgton

A free workshop, hosted by Maine Audubon, in partnership with the Forest Stewards Guild and the Maine Forest Service will be held on August 22 at the Maine Lakes Science Center at 51 Willett Road, in Bridgton, Maine. Forestry for Maine Birds pairs silviculture the art and science of forest management – with the habitat needs of Maine’s migratory forest songbirds. Participants will learn how to assess forest bird habitat and consider management options that benefit breeding forest songbirds in a variety of forest types. This workshop is for foresters, woodland owners, land trust staff and members, and bird enthusiasts.

Registration will begin at 8:30 am with an outdoor session on the Maine Lakes Science Center grounds starting at 9 am. Light refreshments will be served. This workshop is free, but space is limited.  To register, please contact: Annica McGuirk, amcguirk@maineaudubon.org or (207) 781-2330 x219.

Mushroom Foray at the Yankee Woodlot in Skowhegan

Saturday, September 16th, 9 to noon

Please join the Upper Kennebec Valley chapter as we go on a mushroom foray with mycologist Michaeline Mulvey of the Maine Mycological Society.  Michaeline has led a few of these for our chapter and she is full of great information.  She will lead us on a foray that will include identification, an explanation of a mushrooms’ place in the forest ecosystem, and ethical harvesting. Bring questions and mushrooms. Be prepared for bushwhacking. Also useful: basket, knife, paper bags, hand lens, notebook, field guide. Meet at Somerset County Extension office, between Margaret Chase Smith Library and KVCAP office at 7 County Drive off the Back road in Skowhegan.  This is a rain or shine event, and no need to pre-register, just show up to learn mushrooms!  Any questions contact Patty Cormier, 592-2238 or email - patty.cormier@maine.gov

Save the Date: Midcoast Conservancy’s Hidden Valley Nature Center “A Day in the Woods” - Jefferson

Mark your calendar for “A Day in the Woods” on Saturday, Oct 14th, (rain date Oct. 15). Midcoast Conservancy’s Hidden Valley Nature Center in Jefferson is hosting a full day of information and fun in the woods. A few of the highlights include:

  • Learn by listening and talking to experts discuss low-impact forestry, improving the ability of forest practices to sequester carbon and enhance wildlife habitat, the benefits of conservation easements, land trust experiences with forestry, and more.
  • Learn by seeing, doing and walking with pros. There will be guided walks and talks; demonstrations of logging with horses, small scale equipment, and a small European cut-to-length processor; workshops on trail building and tree pruning, dealing with invasive plants and bugs; exhibits and more.
  • Learn by having fun. There will be several university woodsmen team competitions, guided walks for kids with readings in the woods, and more
  • Exercise with a “Tour De Woods” FatBike ride.
  • Stomp your feet, dance, or just listen to The Gawler family performing new and old logging songs.

Food and beverages for purchase, including beer from several Maine breweries.
