If you enjoy camping and helping others enjoy the outdoors, then consider becoming a Park Host. Branch Lake in Ellsworth has three volunteer Park Host positions available that serve the day-use visitors of this beach area and boat launch.
In exchange for 20 hours per week of host duties, you'll receive a campsite with a 3-way RV hook-up. Each of the three sites has a picnic table and fireplace. There is also a public toilet on site.
To Apply: Complete the Campground Host Application and email it directly to Mike Leighton (Mike.Leighton@Maine.gov)

Theodore Roosevelt credited his love of the outdoors and conservation ethic to his visits to Maine. In a letter written in March of 1918 Roosevelt described his hunting trips and visits to logging camps with Bill Sewall and Wilmont Dow and opened the letter with:
"I owe a personal debt to Maine because of my association with certain staunch friends in Aroostook County; an association that helped and benefited me throughout my life in more ways than one."
As a young man under the guidance of his lifelong friend and guide Bill Sewall, Roosevelt camped at the southern end of Mattawamkeag Lake and hunted and fished throughout the area. It was reported that, each day, Roosevelt would take his bible and hike to a beautiful point of land at the confluence of the West Branch of the Mattawamkeag River and First Brook where he would read the bible. A plaque at the site commemorates Roosevelt's love for the area. It was erected in 1921 by Roosevelt biographer Hermann Hagedorn. This location is now the 27-acre Bible Point State Historic Site.
Getting There: Four wheel drive and a Maine Gazetteer or other up-to-date atlas is recommended. From Route 2 in Sherman, take the Lower Pond Rd. to Sly Rd. and follow to the end. Park and walk one mile to Bible point. Lat 45.950454, Lon -68.149813
