Woods Wise Wire
In
light of the ups and downs of the pulp markets these days, it is a good thing
to know when you have sawlog quality logs and even better, veneer quality
logs. Please join the Upper Kennebec Valley Chapter of the Maine
Woodlands Association as we meet with Log Buyer Bob Bond of Michigan Veneer at
their New Sharon log yard on Saturday, March 18th from 9 a.m. to
noon. Bob will guide us through scaling logs and what makes a veneer log,
and how to get the best scale out of your logs. We will look at good
samples and get some scaling practice in! This will be a rain or shine
event. No need to pre-register; just show up. Everyone
is welcome! The address is 5 Weeks
Mills Road, right at the Route 2 intersection. The yard might be muddy, so you may have to park on the side of Weeks Mills
Road. Saturday, March 18, 9 a.m. to noon. Any questions,
contact Patty Cormier at 592-2238 or patty.cormier@maine.gov.

It’s
no secret the forestry products industry is changing rapidly. As we have
learned from the Maine Forest Economy Growth Initiative, Maine will have to
adapt quickly and strategically to maintain its role in the global forest
economy. UMaine’s investment in research, development and
commercialization of emerging wood technologies will help Maine to revitalize
its industry.
We’ll tour the Advanced Structures and Composites Center laboratory with
Russell Edgar, Senior Lab Operations and Wood Composites Manager. Registration
requested by March 22 to Larry Beauregard at redspruce@myfairpoint.net or
989-6158.

Forest Service
Many
small woodland owners have wildlife as a major focus in their forest management
objectives. Dr. Blomberg presents his experience with ruffed grouse in
varied forest habitats.
In
2014 the Wildlife Demographics Lab at the University of Maine and the Department
of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife began the first large-scale investigation of
ruffed grouse ecology in Maine. Over three years we have captured and
radio-marked hundreds of grouse to better-understand their survival, harvest,
and general habits throughout their annual cycle. During this talk I will
discuss preliminary results from the first three years of our work.
Directions: From
I-95, take ME-43 exit 197 to Old Town. Go east toward Old Town. Look for DeWitt
Airport on your left. Turn in and veer right after the town garage on a
dead end road to the MFS building.
Registration is requested by
April 5, 2017. Please respond by e-mail to Larry Beauregard, SWOAM Penobscot
Valley Chapter Leader, at redspruce@myfairpoint.net
or by phone at (207) 989-6158.
