Is Your School a Vacation Destination for Pests?

messy breakroom

Schools are a popular pest destination during winter break. Donuts left out in the break room. Candy canes glued to posters in the kindergarten classroom. Popcorn strung on the potted tree in the main office. It all spells free food for pests.  Head off unpleasant New Year's surprises with good pre-vacation checklists. Here are some sample checklist items for classrooms:

  • Classroom is well-organized and uncluttered. All materials should be off the floor and away from walls to allow for inspection and cleaning.
  • Lockers and desks are emptied and cleaned.
  • No returnables or other open beverage containers.
  • All food items (including snacks, dry ingredients, edible art supplies, dried plant material) stored only in well-sealed pest-proof containers. Plastic bags are not pest-proof. ‰
  • Refrigerators, microwave ovens, and vending machines are clean inside and out. ‰Sink areas are clean and dry.

‰‰Find more pest-prevention checklists on our webpage (www.maine.gov/schoolipm) - click on 'Tools, Templates and Tips' or type 'school checklist' in the search bar.

The Bottom Line

budget calculator guy

How much are you spending on pest management? Do you know the cost of staff time spent responding to pest problems? Can IPM save you money? In Maine, George Stevens Academy reported saving more than $11,000 by including more IPM practices, such as soil testing, into their grounds management program. Another district described in a recent issue of the EPA PESPWire newsletter how they used IPM to cut pest control costs by 86% and pesticide use by 99%.

A free online tool, the School IPM Budget Calculator can help you analyze how well your pest control program is working. Use the calculator to identify IPM strategies with the best cost/benefit advantage for your district. For example, use it compare the cost and benefit of replacing exterior door sweeps to seal out pests and reduce energy loss versus the costs of installing and servicing rodent bait stations and traps.
