Colonial Pemaquid State Historic Site to host a
17th Century Encampment
NEW HARBOR - Colonial Pemaquid State Historic Site in New Harbor is
hosting a 17th Century Encampment on July 30 and 31. The event will highlight the early history of
Maine and the activities that shaped the early settlements of the
mid-coast. Living history interpreters
will showcase maritime, civilian, military and Native American aspects of life
in Colonial America. The encampment is
open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday.
This look into the 17th Century will include a
replica of a 17th Century shallop, craft demonstrations, firearms
displays, and lectures by local historians. Saturday and Sunday will feature a demonstration of cod splitting set in
a display of a cod fisherman’s equipment from the late 17th
Century. Cod was a valuable commodity in
Colonial America and care was required in preparation to insure its quality
during the four week voyage from Maine to England.
Visitors to Colonial Pemaquid State Historic Site are invited
