Saco River Recreational Council and Partners Hosting “All Things
Invasive” Fair
Please join us Saturday May 14th for a one of a kind
Invasive Species Fair. The Saco River Recreational Council and partners,
including the Upper Saco Valley Land Trust, will be hosting “All Things
Invasive” to educate the public on how to recognize invasive threats and what
to do to help prevent and manage them. Everyone who participates in the
fair will receive a free baby tree to take home and plant, thanks to a generous
donation by Kate and Rick Eastman.
The fair will be held at the Swans Falls Campground in
Fryeburg, ME starting at 9 am. It will be a fun, hands-on learning day
with raffle prizes, displays and presentations by invasive species
experts. The event will be outside, and will occur rain or shine so
please dress appropriately. Karen Coluzzi and Colleen Teerling of the
Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry will present on
invasive forest pests. Two pesticide credits will be offered.
Mary Jewett of the Lakes Environmental Association will
conduct a free courtesy boat inspection training for new and current boat
inspectors.
Laurie Callahan, Biologist with York County Aquatic
Species Project and Melissa Brandt, District Manager with York County Soil and
Water District will educate on invasive aquatic and terrestrial plants, such as
Japanese knotweed, black locust and more.
There will also be a special guest who will talk about
ticks and how to reduce the risk of Lyme disease. Michelle Broyer of the
Saco River Recreational Council and Education Coordinator at the Swans Falls
Campground will be on hand to talk about opportunities for job seekers,
internships and volunteers.
Registration in advance is recommended. A bag lunch
will be provided for those who pre-register, but walk-ins are also welcome.
