FALL FOLIAGE SEASON BEGINS
~The best is yet to come~

Augusta, ME (September 9, 2015) - Today is the official start of Maine’s fall foliage season and even though the weather resembles July’s, it is time to start planning for the upcoming fall season. Currently, the 2015 Fall Foliage Report from the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry states that there are only slight changes to view in the forests.

“Right now we are expecting a typical fall foliage season with northern Maine (zones 6 and 7) reaching peak conditions the last week of September into the first week of October. The rest of the state’s progression of color will start occurring from north to south in mid-October.  Coastal Maine typically reaches peak conditions mid-October through Oct. 24,” according to Gale Ross, Maine’s fall foliage spokesperson.

Leaf peepers can visit the state’s official foliage website www.mainefoliage.com and sign up to receive weekly reports by e-mail. Visitors and natives can share their photos throughout the state as the progression of color begins.

Celebrate the beginning of the season this weekend at the 42nd Annual International Seaplane Fly-In in Greenville or head to the coast for Maine Open Lighthouse Day. Or visit one of Maine’s iconic festivals like the Boothbay Harbor Fest, which will be in full swing this weekend and features local food, live music and events for every type of fun seeker. As well as the annual Eastport Pirate Festival. Show off your finest pirate attire and enjoy three fun-filled days of events, including a Pirate Parade, and the great Pirate Ship race on Passamaquoddy Bay with ships from two countries.

Throughout the season, we will be sharing trip tips for leaf peeping in Maine on Twitter and Facebook during the peak season of each region, as well as statewide events taking place throughout the foliage season and beyond.
