Message from Secretary Rothstein

Ed Rothstein

I begin this message with a heavy heart, mindful of the developing situation in Iran and the tragic loss of six U.S. Army Reserve service members killed in action. May their memories forever be a blessing. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with their families, loved ones, and all those currently serving in harm's way. The Maryland Department of Veterans and Military Families stands ready to support our state’s service members, veterans, and military families during this difficult time.

Over the past several days, I joined fellow state leaders at the National Association of State Directors of Veterans Affairs 2026 Midwinter Conference to share best practices for serving veterans nationwide. During this time, myself and other DVMF leaders, met with counterparts from California, Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, Texas, North Carolina, Oregon, and other states to exchange ideas aimed at strengthening services for veterans and military families.

Our mission is results driven:

  • Federal Benefit Security: In 2025, DVMF served Maryland veterans and their families securing more than $54.5 million in federal benefits.
  • Expert Support: Through the dedication of our team, we assist Maryland’s military-connected community in accessing critical federal, state, and local resources.
  • Strategic Growth: Looking ahead, we are strengthening our strategy to reach more veterans and military families across Maryland and ensure they connect with the resources they deserve.

While policy discussions and legislation continue to evolve, our commitment remains clear: Serving Maryland’s veterans and military families. We remain dedicated to delivering the essential services our community relies on while expanding our reach across the state.

CALL TO ACTION! Reach out anytime, by emailing secretary.dvmf@maryland.gov to share your thoughts and ideas with me. Success is driven through a journey where we are all engaged.

Sincerely,

Ed Rothstein

VA Expands Access to GI Bill Benefits

VA GI Bill

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is making it easier for eligible Veterans to receive additional G.I. Bill benefits following the Supreme Court’s Rudisill decision and the Veterans Court’s Perkins v. Collins ruling. VA will no longer require Veterans to request a review of their eligibility under both the Montgomery GI Bill and Post-9/11 GI Bill. Instead, VA is automatically reviewing cases—prioritizing Veterans with fewer than three months of benefits remaining who are currently enrolled or were recently enrolled in school—to ensure no eligible student loses access to earned education benefits. VA is also updating its systems to automate these reviews and will notify Veterans once determinations are complete.
