Maryland Veterans Joint Commission Summit

On January 17, 2020,  a Maryland Joint Veterans Commission Summit was held.  The event, planned by Dana Burl, Director of the MDVA Outreach & Advocacy Program brought together for the first time, the four Maryland State Commissions concerning veterans and also included representatives of the County and Local Veterans Commissions.

Participating Commissions included: Maryland Veterans Commission, Maryland Home Commission, Maryland War Memorial Commission, and the Maryland College Collaboration for Student Veterans Commission.  In addition, County Veterans Commission members or representatives from county governments attended from:  Anne Arundel County, Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Carroll County, Charles County, Frederick County, Howard County, Mid-Shore and Lower-Shore Networks, Montgomery County and Prince Georges County.

The Summit included briefings by the Maryland Department of Veterans Affairs, the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, the Maryland State Commissions and also included time for regional discussions and networking.

MDVA is proud to take the lead in connecting the state and local Commissions working to support Maryland Veterans.

Veterans Claims Clinic and Resource Fair

Mark Your Calendars: On March 19, 2020 MDVA will join the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, the Chesapeake Veterans Alliance, Carroll County Government and Carroll County Community College in hosting a Veterans Claims Clinic and Resource Fair in Westminster.  For More Information:

Governor Hogan Commemorates 175th Anniversary of
United States Naval Academy

Naval Academy event

Governor Larry Hogan hosted a ceremony to kick off the year-long celebration of the 175th anniversary of the United States Naval Academy, one of the nation’s most historic and distinguished institutions. The governor was joined by Vice Admiral Sean Buck, the 63rd Superintendent of the Naval Academy, Captain Thomas Buchanan, 88th Commandant of Midshipmen, and Naval Academy midshipmen and personnel as he presented an official proclamation recognizing this milestone.

Gilchrist's Third Annual Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day Celebration

Gilchrist’s third annual Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day Celebration is a day to honor and thank the men and women in our community who served during the Vietnam War. This Welcome Home celebration honors the veterans in our care as well as all of the veterans and their loved ones in our community. This celebration is one of the many ways Gilchrist recognizes the unique needs of veterans and thanks them for their sacrifice and service to our state and our country.

Operation Tohidu® is a free, 5-day experiential retreat program for veterans or service members that have been diagnosed with or are self-identifying post-traumatic stress, traumatic brain injury, anxiety, depression, moral injury or military sexual trauma. The program is open to veterans from across the country, from all eras and most discharge statuses.
“Tohidu” is a Cherokee word meaning peace of mind, body, and spirit and Operation Tohidu® retreats continue to promote “Peace with the past through power in the Present” for hundreds of veterans each year.
