From the Editor
Across the country, communities are commemorating America’s 250th anniversary by revisiting the stories that shaped our Revolution; here in Talbot County, that story can not be told without Colonel Tench Tilghman. A trusted aide to General George Washington, Tilghman carried the news of Cornwallis’s surrender at Yorktown to the Continental Congress — a ride that signaled the dawn of American independence.
As we celebrate Tench Tilghman Week (October 19-24), we honor his loyalty and courage. This month, Talbot250 invites you to reflect on how one messenger’s journey from the Eastern Shore helped change the course of a nation, and how our own stories, too, will shape the next 250 years.
Warm regards,
Sarah Kilmon Communications Coordinator Talbot County Government

As we commemorate Tench Tilghman Week later this month, Talbot250 invites you to reflect on how one messenger’s journey from the Eastern Shore helped change the course of a nation and how our own stories, too, will shape the next 250 years.
How do we 'deliver' the ideals of liberty and unity?
Tench Tilghman’s ride from Yorktown to Philadelphia was more than a military mission. It was an act of trust, perseverance, and belief in a new American future. Like so many who have carried messages of hope, justice, or progress since then, his story reminds us that ordinary people can move history forward.
As we honor his legacy, we invite you to consider:
- What message would you carry for your community today?
- How do we, as citizens, continue to “deliver” the ideals of liberty and unity that Tilghman once rode to share?
