From the Editor
September is a month of remembrance and reflection as we honor our nation’s history and the values of freedom and democracy.
This month, Talbot250 recognizes Underground Railroad Month and Constitution Week, alongside our community’s observance of September 11.
Maryland is known as an important state on the Underground Railroad, and Talbot County is central to that story as the birthplace of Frederick Douglass. His journey from enslavement here to international leader continues to inspire generations.
At the same time, Constitution Week reminds us of the document signed in 1787 that continues to guide our democracy. Talbot leaders like Matthew Tilghman helped shape its foundation, and this week encourages us to reflect on the responsibilities of citizenship.
And as we gather on September 11 to remember the lives lost in 2001, we are reminded of the resilience of our communities and the enduring importance of unity and service.
Together, these commemorations ask us to honor those who fought for freedom, those who framed our democracy, and those whose sacrifice continues to shape our nation’s story.
Warm regards,
Sarah Kilmon Communications Coordinator Talbot County Government

Matthew Tilghman, called the “Father of the American Revolution in Maryland,” led the colony through independence as de facto governor (1774–1776) and chaired Maryland’s delegation to the Continental Congress. A friend of George Washington, he was also the uncle of Colonel Tench Tilghman. To see other "People of Talbot" featured, visit our website. |

The Talbot 250 Commission recently held its third official meeting (see notes here), continuing our work to shape events and programs leading up to Talbot County’s 365th anniversary in 2026. One of our priorities is developing lasting legacy projects that will preserve our history and strengthen our community for generations to come.
Sarah Kilmon, Talbot250 Administrator, and Emma Poole, Commission Member, asked library patrons to "share their story" at the Talbot County Free Library 100th Birthday Party event on September 23, 2025.
A key part of this effort is encouraging residents to share their stories. This month, we joined the Talbot County Free Library in celebrating its 100th birthday, where we asked community members what the library — and Easton — mean to them. Here are just a few of the thoughtful responses we received:
“We moved to Talbot County to raise our family, we love the community, the ponds, the library, the way of life, and the people we have met.” — Preston, 21601
“We love the vibrant community here. During early COVID-19, we spent a year and a half here away from our regular home in New York City and were welcomed and included by our neighbors.” — The Canter-Ryan Family, Brooklyn, NY 11215
“The Talbot County Free Library has been my favorite place since I signed up for my first library card at 3 years old. Everyone has always been so welcoming and kind. Storytime was always my favorite with Ms. Rosemary!” — Emma, Easton 21601
We look forward to gathering more stories like these as we continue our journey toward Talbot 250.
