MARCH 2023

Roadway Projects in Carroll County

All scheduled work is weather/temperature dependent

MD 140 (Taneytown Pike) at Mayberry Road- 55% complete

  • This project is adding right-turn lanes to improve intersection operations.
  • The new signal poles were installed and activated last week. The base roadway widening for westbound MD 140 is almost complete. A concrete barrier wall will be installed soon on westbound MD 140 west of Mayberry Road.

Springfield Ave (MD 851) between Spout Hill Road and Walnut Ave -  Drainage improvement project

  • MDOT SHA is assisting Carroll County with a sewer and waterline improvement project on Springfield Avenue (MD 851) between Spout Hill Road and Walnut Avenue in Sykesville. One travel lane is closed during the work hours of 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.

  • Starting Monday, March 6, Main Street between Sandosky Road and the railroad tracks will be closed during the hours of 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. so crews can safely install manholes. The detour route directs motorists to use Sandosky Road to College Avenue to MD 32 (Sykesville Road) to access Main Street. The work is expected to take two weeks to complete.
  • This work is part of a larger project to replace the aging waterline and improve drainage on Springfield Avenue in Sykesville. MDOT SHA has a $2.5 million project to replace the existing storm drain between Main Street and Vantage Point Drive starting this summer. Learn more about this project by clicking here

Looking Ahead

MD 91 (Emory Road) Bridges over the North Branch of the Patapsco River and Maryland Midland Railroad - Bridge replacement project

  • MDOT SHA will replace two bridges on MD 91 starting this spring. We are currently working on the bridge's design with the railroad company which may impact the construction schedule.
  • Both bridges will be closed during construction. The detour route is expected to be in effect for nine months. The proposed route directs motorists to either MD 30 or MD 140.
  • MDOT SHA will hold a public meeting on March 9 at the Finksburg branch of the Carroll County Public Library from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. A newsletter was mailed to area residents and businesses last month.
