Leaders, Presidents and Politics
Take your students back in time to explore history-making
leaders, influential speeches, and critical moments in politics.
Silver and Gold: The 1896 Election The election contest between William McKinley and William Jennings Bryan was
seen as the beginning of a new era in American politics, where economic issues
played a crucial role. MPT’s online inquiry kit supports student learning
around this pivotal time through the examination and analysis of primary source
documents from the Library of Congress. The unit includes key thinking
questions to prompt inquiry around a collection of resources including an
illustration, article, political pamphlet and cartoon, and a written song.

Presidential Messages
During the Early Cold War During the Cold War, the U.S. and the Soviet Union competed for resources and
power. They became involved in a dangerous race to create the largest
militaries and the most powerful nuclear weapons. In MPT’s
literacy-building social studies activity, students examine two of Truman’s
speeches during the Cold War, specific vocabulary in the speeches, and the way
vocabulary and other methods are used to convey messages and point of view.

Citizens’ Rights and
Responsibilities: Voting One of the features of a true democracy is free and open elections. In MPT’s
civics-themed literacy lesson, students analyze quantitative and qualitative
forms of information in order to answer compelling research questions about
voter participation trends and citizens’ rights. To reinforce learning along
the way, the interactive module includes an introductory welcome section,
followed by “learn, try, review and conquer” activities, along with a final
exit ticket.
