It's time for knowledge-building November activities! Bring history-rich resources to your classroom to celebrate Native American Heritage Month, reinvigorate your professional development, and take part in Maryland's extraordinary STEM Festival.   


Native American Heritage Month: Activities

November is National Native American Heritage Month. Help your students learn more about this tradition-filled heritage, history and culture with innovative literacy, social studies and math activities.


Early Native American

Early Native American Policy
Land negotiations, tribes and the law! In this social studies-themed literacy interactive, students study how point of view is conveyed by examining two speeches concerning the U.S. government's policy regarding American Indians in the 1800’s. Grades 9-10.

Native American Heritage Collection
Take a fascinating look at Native American art, history, and culture as told through historians, artists, students, and scientists in this featured resource collection. Grades 3-12. 


 A Game of Math: Picaria
Promote strategic thinking skills! In this Native American game that originated in the Pueblo Nation of New Mexico, players line up three stones in a row on a playing board, while their opponent tries to block them and line up their stones instead. Grades K-5.

Model with Math

Modeling with Mathematics in the Classroom
Develop a plan to implement modeling in your classroom with MPT's short, self-paced module broken down into elementary, middle and high school grade bands. Each grade band includes a welcome section, exploration, activity pages, and a wrap up. 


Close Reading

A Focus on Close Reading
See close reading practiced in three classrooms, at multiple grade levels and subject areas. In this video, students learn about reading for deeper meaning and comprehension, and how to delve into text to understand what the author is really trying to say.

Maryland STEM Festival

Get ready for a remarkable series of events providing rewarding STEM opportunities to students and families throughout the state. Ten days of collaborative, interactive activities include everything from  LEGO robotics and coding, to electric art and 3D printing.

Maryland NSA Day of Cyber

Educators, students, families and organizations! Join this remarkable virtual and interactive experience designed to raise career awareness and ignite interest in cyber career opportunities. Take a seat beside the NSA Cyber Threat Director and test drive a day in the life of six NSA cyber professionals.
