Hello Neighbors,
On Wednesday, April 2, 2025, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will hold a public meeting at Oxon Hill High School from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM to share updates and gather feedback on the proposed I-495 Southside Express Lanes project.
This proposal would expand the Capital Beltway from Springfield, Virginia, across the Woodrow Wilson Bridge to the MD 210 Interchange in Prince George’s County. I want to ensure that our community is informed and engaged as plans for this significant regional project develop.
While the goal of reducing congestion is essential, several concerns have been raised about the current proposal, including:
• Potential traffic bottlenecks in Prince George’s County where the express lanes would end. • Impacts on the reserved space for future Metrorail service across the Woodrow Wilson Bridge. • Limited analysis of alternative solutions, such as transit improvements, express bus options, or high-occupancy vehicle lanes. • The possibility of increased local traffic as more vehicles exit the expanded Beltway into our communities.
I encourage you to attend the public meeting to learn more, ask questions, and provide feedback directly to VDOT. Your input is crucial in ensuring that any transportation investments align with the needs and long-term vision of Prince George’s County.
