Black History Month
Happy Black History Month from the Office of Vice Chair Sydney Harrison. As we honor Black History Month, we celebrate the invaluable contributions and achievements of Black Americans, throughout history. From trailblazers in the civil rights movement to pioneers in arts, sciences, and beyond, their collective impact resonates through countless generations, inspiring progress and change.
We encourage everyone to use this month not only to reflect on the past, but also to amplify Black voices, support Black-owned businesses, and continue the journey towards equality and justice for all. Together, let us all continue the work of building a future where every voice is heard and every dream is achieved!
Yours In Service,
Sydney J. Harrison Vice-Chair Prince George's County Council (Council District 9)

This year’s theme is Black musicians and local music venues. During the Jim Crow era, Black musicians were regularly excluded from performing at venues around the D.C. area. Thus, a network of performance venues was created called the “Chitlin’ Circuit.” The Chitlin’ Circuit was a network of urban and rural performance venues of various types and sizes. They provided a critical space for Black musicians and performers to share their talents. |
