Extreme Heat, Next Several Days

Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, remain indoors, and/or utilize designated cooling centers. High temperatures and humidity are anticipated across the region Thursday, July 27, through Saturday, July 29. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an excessive heat advisory for tomorrow, Thursday, July 27 from 11:00 a.m. through 8:00 p.m. The Prince George’s County Office of Homeland Security’s Emergency Management Division offers the following reminders to take precautions, to avoid heat-related illnesses:

  • Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration; even if you do not feel thirsty. Avoid drinks with alcohol, sugar, and caffeine. Persons who have epilepsy or heart, kidney, or liver disease; are on fluid-restricted diets; or have a problem with retention should consult a doctor before increasing liquid intake.
  • During excessive heat, limit outdoor activities. If you must be out during the hottest part of the day, be sure to wear lightweight and light-colored clothing and a hat to minimize the potential for heat exhaustion.
  • Never leave children, older adults, or pets alone in closed vehicles. Temperatures in parked cars can reach an estimate of 130 degrees within minutes, resulting in brain damage or death.
  • Check on family, friends, and neighbors who do not have air conditioning and who spend much of their time alone. More specifically, older adults, families with young children, people with special needs, or individuals living alone to ensure their safety and hydration.
  • Check on your animals frequently to ensure that they are not suffering from the heat.
  • If your home loses power during periods of extreme heat, go to a designated public shelter. Stay on the lowest floor and out of the sunshine, if air conditioning is not available.
  • Register for Alert Prince George’s to receive emergency information, via your mobile or landline phones, including severe weather alerts from the National Weather Service and emergency information from the Prince George’s County Office of Homeland Security’s  Emergency Management Division.

Residents can also utilize any of the County’s designated cooling centers:

Keeping Your Pets Safe in Hot Weather

Animals are more susceptible to heatstroke and dehydration. The Prince George’s County Animal Control Ordinance Section 3-180, titled "Animal Cruelty and Neglect," says all domestic animals except livestock are prohibited from being kept outdoors when the heat index is 90 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, as determined by the National Weather Service.

Below are a few precautions you can take to help keep your pet safe and cool during the heat of summer:

  • Overheating can kill an animal; Never leave your pet alone in a car, even with open windows. Maryland forbids leaving a pet in an unattended vehicle, even if the air conditioning is running.
  • Protect pets from heat and sun with plenty of fresh, cold water. Tree shade and tarps are good options that do not obstruct airflow. A doghouse can trap heat and may make it worse for a dog.
  • When the temperature and humidity are very high, be careful of your pet’s paw pads lingering on hot asphalt, as it can quickly burn them.
  • Exercise your pet in the cool of the early morning or evening. If you’re planning outdoor activities with your pet, remember to carry extra water and a container for your pet.
  • If you notice your pet overheating, such as excessive panting, difficulty breathing, or increased heart and respiratory rate, immediately seek help from a veterinarian.

Any person who inflicts unnecessary suffering or pain upon the animal; may be charged by the provisions of Subsection (b). To view a copy of the Animal Control Ordinance, please visit Animal Control Code. To report an animal experiencing neglect or cruelty, contact the Animal Services Division at 301-780-7200, and select “1” for animal-related emergencies. For more information on how to keep your pet healthy and safe in weather conditions, please visit Protect Your Pets.
