Student Safety at Isaac Gourdine Middle School
The Prince George’s County Police Department reports that an Isaac J. Gourdine Middle School student was taken into custody yesterday without incident for possession of a firearm at the school located in Fort Washington.
Police say the weapon, a loaded non-serialized ghost gun, was recovered. We are grateful that all students are safe and no injuries were reported. A new state law banning the sale, receipt, and transfer of ghost guns, which can be made at home with 3D printers or purchased in kits online, took effect in Maryland on June 1, 2022.
The preliminary investigation revealed that the 13-year-old showed the weapon to other students yesterday morning, one of whom reported it. Charges against the student are pending and an investigation is ongoing.
Weapons in our schools is a problem for all of us. The safety and security of our children, and entire school community are top priorities, and we encourage parents and guardians to continue to engage in conversations with their children about the role they play in school safety.
I am thankful for how the situation was handled yesterday and for the students, school personnel, and authorities who spoke up and acted to ensure no one was hurt.
