Juneteenth: Celebrating Freedom
Residents,
This special edition of the District 6 Community News includes information on Juneteenth events occurring in District 6 and other areas of Prince George’s County. We are reminded that “Juneteenth is a day to remember the sacrifices of our ancestors and renew our commitment to protect the right to freedom through democratic institutions, by which the tenets of freedom are guaranteed and protected.” This sentiment is reflected in CR-78-2022 that I sponsored to express support for the celebration of Juneteenth National Freedom Day. I offer my sincere thanks to my colleagues on the County Council for their unanimous support of this Resolution.
As the oldest known celebration honoring the end of slavery in the United States, Juneteenth is an official holiday, recognized in over 40 states, the District of Columbia and of course, in Prince George’s County and now the State of Maryland with the passing of HB227 that creates June 19th, Juneteenth, as a State Holiday in Maryland. I am pleased to support all Juneteenth celebrations held in Prince George’s County and encourage the participation and attendance of employees, families and communities at the observances this year. The Juneteenth celebrations this year include the annual celebration hosted by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission at Watkins Regional Park, the Lake Arbor Foundation, and the City of District Heights. Take a moment to review the entire Celebrate Juneteenth section of the District 6 Community News and plan to celebrate this important holiday with family and friends. I look forward to seeing you out and about in the heart of Prince George's County.
Forward Ever, Together,
Hon. Johnathan M. Medlock Council Member, District 6
