Greetings District 8 Resident,
On Monday, January 17, 2022, we will celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service. This year marks the 36th anniversary of the nationwide observance of this federal holiday. Emmett Till's cousin, Reverend Wheeler Parker, Jr., shared a meaningful quote that is applicable to today's world.
"Laws make you behave better, but they don't legislate your heart".
Reverend Wheeler Parker, Jr.

Prince George’s County Prepares for Winter Storm with Pretreatment of Roadways throughout the County
Largo, MD – Prince George’s County’s Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) will mobilize for another winter storm that is expected to impact the region on Sunday, January 16th, continuing into the Martin Luther King Holiday. AccuWeather predicts snow will arrive around 1 p.m. and is expected to end after 1 p.m. on Monday. DPW&T staff and crews will run a safe Full Operation initially, adjusting operations as deemed necessary.
To ensure the safety of our men and women, DPW&T will continue to utilize the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) COVID-19 best practices during this event, practicing social distancing and using proper personal protective equipment (PPE). Staff and crews will communicate via virtual platforms such as Zoom and Microsoft teams.
“DPW&T crews have already started the pretreatment of the primary and major collector roadways throughout the County. We would like to remind residents to stay off the roads during inclement weather if possible, and to not abandon their vehicles,” said Acting Director, Martin L. Harris.
Residents are also reminded to encourage their neighbors to park on the same side of the street to ensure accessibility for the snowplows. During winter events routes are prioritized for service by the following categories: primary, secondary, and residential. Primary and secondary roads are serviced first to ensure that public safety and emergency vehicles can travel. Also, please wait 48 hours after snowfall has ended before reporting concerns regarding untreated roadways to 3-1-1.

Prince George's County students will resume in-person virtual learning on Tuesday, January 18, 2022. Prince George's County Public School Dr. and Chief Executive Officer, Monica Goldson, has shared additional COVID-19 mitigation measures (listed below) that are being implemented, Click Here for her full statement and for more information needed.
-
Home test kits and KN95 masks will be distributed to all students and staff. One kit containing two tests will be available for each child enrolled in our schools. The distribution will be held at schools and offices. Students will be requested to test weekly in order to return to school the following week. Every Sunday, tests should be taken and results uploaded from January 23 through February 27. The link for uploading will be provided next week. Home test kits will be distributed biweekly until the end of February to facilitate this request.
-
More students will be randomly tested in our weekly pools. We have worked with testing vendors to double the capacity to 20 percent of students.
-
New county and state quarantine rules were implemented with clear guidance on when students can return to school after contracting or being exposed to COVID-19.
-
Staff testing was expanded during virtual learning. All employees regardless of vaccination status were able to get free COVID testing provided by PGCPS due to the difficulty of obtaining tests in the community. Weekly testing of unvaccinated staff will continue.
-
No spectators will be allowed at athletic events through the end of January. Athletes who are not vaccinated will continue to be tested weekly. Starting Tuesday, February 1, attendance at athletic events will be limited to 25 percent of building capacity.
The Department of Permitting, Inspections and Enforcement (DPIE) has modified some of its inspection processes to enhance the safety of both residents and staff in the wake of the surge in COVID-19 cases across the region and State. The changes include the expanded utilization of virtual inspections for indoor inspections and limiting in-person meetings. Administrators are also closely monitoring staff affected by COVID-19 to ensure coverage of necessary inspections and other functions. To read the full article Click Here
