Greetings District 8 Residents,
Hoping that the season of beauty and light-filled your home with happiness during the Hanukkah festival of lights. As celebrations continue, we wish you a joyful, peaceful, and healthy holiday season. In this issue, we have information for holiday fun in District 8 and in the county for you and your family.
Pursuant to Council Rule of Procedure 4.7, the County Council held a virtual public meeting on Tuesday, December 7, 2021 at 11:00 am for Exchange of Gavel. Due to unforeseen technical issues live streaming was not fully functional. However, for the public’s convenience the meeting has been archived for viewing on the County Council's website.

The Prince George's County Council reelected Council Member At Large and 2021 Chair, Calvin Hawkins, to serve as Chair for Legislative Year 2022. Council Member Sydney Harrison (District 9) was elected to serve as Vice Chair.

Process in Place to Fill District 8 Vacancy
The Prince George’s County Council, on Monday, November 15, 2021, adopted
CR-135-2021, declaring a vacancy on the County Council created by the November 8, 2021, resignation of District 8 Council Member Monique Anderson-Walker.
CR-135-2021 establishes dates for conducting the Special Primary Election and the Special Election to fill the Council vacancy and sets the Certification of Candidacy deadline.
Special Primary Election
The Special Primary Election has been scheduled for Tuesday, January 4, 2022, 7am-8pm.
Special Primary Election Early Voting will be conducted on December 27-December 30, 2021 and January 2-3, 2022, (10am-8pm each day and 12pm-6pm on Sunday, January 2, 2022).
Special General Election
The Special General Election will be held on Tuesday, February 1,2022, 7am-8pm.
Special General Election Early Voting will be conducted on January 26-January 31, 2022, (10am-8pm each day and 12pm-6pm on Sunday, January 30, 2022).
Certificate of Candidacy must be filed with the Board of Elections by Tuesday, December 7, 2021.
Pursuant to County Charter Section 309, a Special Election must be held to fill a vacancy on the Council, in this case, defined as the resignation of a Council Member, occurring within the first three years of a term. Section 2-104 of the County Code provides that when there is a vacancy in the office of a Council Member during the first three years of a term, the Council, within seven days, shall adopt a Resolution directing that a special primary election and a special election by the registered voters of the Council District concerned, be held to fill the vacancy.

District 8 includes the constituent areas of Andrews Air Force Base, Camp Springs, Clinton, Forest Heights, Fort Washington, Glass Manor, Marlow Heights, Oxon Hill, and Temple Hills.

District 8 Ribbon Cutting
The Coalition for African Americans in the Performing Arts (CAAPA) hosted their ribbon-cutting on Thursday December 9, 2021 for the CAAPA Cultural Center housed at the Henson Valley Christian Church, 1900 Tucker Road, Fort Washington, Maryland.
The last in-person District 8 event, before the pandemic, was a CAPPA event at Harmony Hall.
The CAAPA Cultural Center will be provide their musical productions, recitals, seminars, arts integration programs, and camps, serving ages 5 - 95, in District 8, and throughout the county.
CAAPA was founded in 2003 by classically trained siblings, Victor and Pamela Simonson. Terri Allen, the mother of Victor and Pamela, is the Executive Director of CAAPA. A Proclamation was presented to CAAPA's Pamela Simonson and Terri Allen, on behalf of County Executive Alsobrooks, at the ribbon-cutting.
On Saturday, January 22, 2022 - 4:00 pm, CAAPA will be presenting "Opera...from a Sista's Point of View" at Prince George's Community College Center for the Performing Arts in Largo, Maryland. The County’s Emergency Rental Assistance Program will stop accepting new applications on Wednesday, December 15 at 3:00 PM. The Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) will continue to review and process remaining applications.
