Greetings District 8 Neighbors,
Congratulations to our Prince George's County Public School educators, staff, graduates, students and last, but not least, the parents for adapting and reaching the milestone finish line next week for the 2020 school year. We will all remember the 2020 school year and how Covid-19 abruptly changed our normal routines and systems.
To close out the school year, I sponsored a Gun Violence and Mental Health Awareness interactive program for the District 8 high school students. The facilitator for the program. Tyreese McAllister, LPC, CSOTP, has been a speaker in the District 8 "MOVING FORWARD series that I launched in May 2020 to provide the support of mental health professionals and interactive community engagement. In addition to Mrs. McAllister being a mental health professional, she is a mother whose daughter's life was taken in gun violence. The students participated and were engaged, sharing their grief from losses they have suffered and being empathetic to those who had experienced these traumatic losses.
The students were also grieving from the loss of two Crossland High School students, who were in a horrific car crash. One was a former student and Taniyah Ellison, was a senior who sadly died the day before her graduation with her classmates. Our #DrivingItHome program has been shared with the high schools pre-Covid and this crash taking four lives is heart wrenching. Hearing the young people express their raw emotions confirmed that the high priority District 8 has given to mental wellness initiatives for all ages, these past three years, are essential. Our prayers and thoughts are with the Ellison family and the Crossland family.

Healthcare and Self-care are non-negotiable when it comes to our mental and physical wellness. I have been a proponent of redefining our economy to include “destination medicine”, transformative solutions, creating healthy and vibrant communities. With the state of the art health facilities throughout the county, we can achieve this. The ribbon cutting of the University of Maryland Capitol Region Medical Center on Tuesday, June 8th was another acknowledgment that it is a right to deliver quality healthcare to all.

We apologize for communicating in our May 25 Orange Alert that Justice the service dog was found and reunited with the owner. Unfortunately, this is not the case and Justice is still out in the community.
UPDATE: Justice was last spotted on Sunday, May 16, 2021, in the area of Livingston Road & Swan Creek Road, Fort Washington, MD.
Justice has a very crucial role in the life of the owner. A service dog helps a person with a disability lead a more independent life. Service animals are specifically trained to work with a person with a disability which makes it easier for its owner to accomplish one or more major life activities, including caring for oneself, working, performing manual tasks, sleeping, walking, and numerous other activities.
Please call (407) 922-9551 if you have seen Justice or have any information that will lead to a successful reunion.
