Greetings District 8 Neighbors,
September is a month that focuses on three important health issues, Suicide Prevention, Alzheimer's and Prostate Cancer. The pandemic has taken a mental and physical toll on many people. Mental Health support has increased as people are stressed, having changes in their sleep and eating patterns, fearful and worrying, and increased substance abuse use. Don't be ashamed to reach out or ask for help from a professional!
If you or someone you know needs critical help, it is always available 24/7. Dial 211 for Maryland's Hotline or you can call The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800.273.8255 to talk with a professional. Our "MOVING FORWARD" series launched with a mental health session on May 28, 2020 with three mental health experts and a frontline medical worker. The session focused on what people were experiencing, how our youth were being impacted and their virtual learning, heightened substance and domestic abuse, essential workers challenges and they all shared coping skills, helpful ways to manage our new realities personally, with your loved ones, our children, friends and co-workers. Here is a link to that session that is still so relevant - https://youtu.be/Wta2CIRGcPk

I hope that you will join me by supporting the 2020 Walk to End Alzheimer's - Prince Georges. For the past 5 years, the walk has been held in District 8 at the National Harbor, but this year, due to the pandemic, the September 19th Opening and Promise Garden ceremony will be held virtually at 9:00 am. Immediately following the Opening, at 9:30 am, walks will begin. People will be walking everywhere, individually, in teams, in their neighborhoods and other designated areas they decide upon. I am a Courage and a Friend Sponsor for this important cause that impacts approximately 15,000 Prince George's County residents. Join in the fight to find a cure for this epidemic that is the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States. My Grandmother suffered with Alzheimer's and so I witnessed firsthand how difficult it became for family members as the disease worsened with unexpected behavior, separation of who we knew and constantly having to accept and adjust. I will be walking In the Memory of my Grandmother and for people with Alzheimer's, and those who battled the disease and for all the caregivers to those with Alzheimer's. Caregivers need and deserve support, understanding and self care time. To join our District 8 team, Click HERE
Let's do our part to help promote more education and extensive research to be done, so a cure can be found to reverse the pain and challenges this disease imposes on all involved.

One in nine American men will have prostate cancer during his lifetime.
Early detection and advances in treatment are saving lives. Finding prostate cancer when it is still at an early stage offers the best hope for living cancer free for a long time.
- Prostate cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among American men and is the most commonly diagnosed.
- The American Cancer Society estimates that 191,930 men will be told they have prostate cancer in 2020.
- Currently there are nearly 3.1 million American men living with the disease – roughly equal to the population of Chicago.
The most recent research shows the five-year survival rate for all men with prostate cancer is nearly 100 percent. The relative 10-year survival rate is 98 percent, and 96 percent for 15 years.
