Greetings District 6 Residents,
On Wednesday, May 13, 2020, Governor Larry Hogan announced that the state of Maryland would enter phase 1 of the “Road to Recovery” at the state level in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic but that individual jurisdictions, including Prince George's County, would be granted flexibility for emerging from under the restrictions put in place to stall the spread of the virus.
To that end, Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks held a press conference on Thursday, May 14, 2020, issuing an executive order to extend countywide stay-at-home restrictions, effective Friday, May 15, at 5:00pm through June 1. The Prince George's County Council issued Council Resolution (CR-31-2020), a resolution for the purposes of continuing the emergency Declaration of County Executive Alsobrooks set forth in Executive orders 6-2020 and 7-2020.
What does this mean for residents? All persons living in Prince George’s County, Maryland are hereby ordered, effective as of 5:00 p.m. on May 15, 2020, to stay in their homes or places of residences to conduct or participate in essential activities or permitted outdoor activities. It is important to note that nonessential businesses are still closed, restaurants are limited to takeout and delivery only and that places of worship should continue to hold virtual services. More information on the County Executive's Order and the Council's Resolution can be found below:
During the County Executive's press conference, it was reported that the coronavirus is now the leading cause of death in Prince George's County, with more than 10,400 confirmed positive cases of COVID-19, nearly 400 deaths. Additionally, the County continues to experience a surge of County residents becoming ill with the virus, holding both the highest number of confirmed cases and the highest positivity rate in Maryland where one in three test positive compared to the state average of one in five, further placing stress on the standard method of providing medical care.
Although the numbers are sobering, there is evidence that citizens are adhering the stay-at-home and are practicing social distancing effectively. Therefore, we must stay vigilant in the fight to flatten the curve. While we do our part to flatten the curve, local officials will continue to work with state and federal officials to ensure that Prince George’s County receive resources to increase testing capacity.
