COUNCIL’S GENERAL ASSEMBLY COMMITTEE REVIEWS PROPOSED STATE LEGISLATION

The Council’s General Assembly Committee, chaired by District 6 Council Member Derrick Leon Davis, met on Tuesday, February 18th to review selected proposed state legislation with potential impact on Prince George’s County. Tuesday’s meeting agenda included legislation regarding County Affairs, Law Enforcement, Education, Bi-County, and Statewide concerns.  WATCH the General Assembly meeting.


COUNCIL HONORS CITY OF SEAT PLEASANT AND DOMESTIC ABUSE SURVIVOR MILDRED MUHAMMAD WITH PROCLAMATIONS

Seat Pleasant

A Council Proclamation is an official declaration recognizing individuals, businesses, organization or events in Prince George’s County, Maryland.  On Tuesday, February 18th, District 7 Council Member Rodney C. Streeter and At-Large Council Member Calvin S. Hawkins, II, presented a Council Proclamation to Seat Pleasant Mayor Eugene W. Grant, recognizing the City of Seat Pleasant as “A Smart City of Excellence.”  In 2017, Mayor Grant signed an agreement with IBM to build a $30 million dollar cloud-based, Intelligent Operations Center that would serve the residents and visitors in the City of Seat Pleasant, transforming Seat Pleasant into A Smart City of Excellence.  VIEW photos.

District 5 Council Member Jolene Ivey also presented a Council Proclamation on Tuesday, honoring award-winning global keynote speaker, domestic abuse survivor, author and advocate, Mildred D. Muhammad for her “Exemplary Role in the Fight Against Domestic Abuse” in Prince George’s County.  VIEW photos.


COUNTY COUNCIL ADOPTS RESOLUTIONS DURING COUNCIL SESSION

Council

Council Members adopted three resolutions during County Council on Tuesday, February 18th.  CR-001-2020, a resolution supporting the goals of LOCAL Maryland to prevent state preemption laws which serve as a tool to weaken local democracies and protect the rights of local governments to pass laws that support healthy families, a clean environment, good jobs and promote equity and inclusion in our municipalities and throughout the State of Maryland; and CR-002-2020, a resolution supporting the settlement offer made by the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Coalition (“HBCU Coalition”) to resolve the lawsuit against the State of Maryland; and urging Governor Hogan and the members of the Maryland General Assembly to settle the HBCU Coalition lawsuit in accordance with the Court ruling and the offer made by the HBCU Coalition, were both approved in General Assembly Committee last week.  During Tuesday’s session, the Council also introduced CR-005-2020, initiating a new Bowie and Vicinity Master Plan.  Council Members voted to adopt the measure following a Committee of the Whole meeting providing an overview and favorable recommendation of the resolution.  WATCH Tuesday’s proclamation presentations and Council Session.


PLANNING, HOUSING AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE RECEIVES BRIEFING; REVIEWS LEGISLATION

The Council’s Planning, Housing and Economic Development (PHED) committee, chaired by District 3 Council Member Dannielle Glaros, met on Thursday, September 20th to receive two briefings and review CB-005-2020, proposed legislation amending the minimum distance requirement for property owned by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission.  The bill was held in committee for further review.  PHED Members heard a briefing regarding the Nuisance Abatement Board, from Michelle Lyons, Board and Commissions Administrator, Department of Permitting, Inspections and Enforcement.  The committee also received a briefing from Barbara Stone, Board of Appeals Administrator, Prince George’s County Council.  WATCH the Planning, Housing and Economic Development Committee Meeting.

County residents and stakeholders are encouraged to attend the County Council’s FY 2021 Budget Town Hall Meeting on Tuesday, February 25th at 7:00 p.m., in the Largo Student Center, Prince George’s Community College.  You are encouraged to come with your budget questions and concerns.  Share your budget priorities and learn more about the County's fiscal outlook and the Council’s Budget Review and Adoption Process.   The Council must adopt a new spending plan for Prince George’s County by June 1st. the new fiscal year begins on July 1st.

COUNCIL CHAIR TODD M. TURNER TESTIFIES IN ANNAPOLIS ON THE BLUEPRINT FOR MARYLAND’S FUTURE

During this session of the Maryland General Assembly, state lawmakers are considering proposed legislation that creates a new formula for education funding that will determine the amount of funding support our schools will receive over the next decade.   On Monday, February 17th, County Council Chair Todd M. Turner testified before a joint meeting of four General Assembly committees in Annapolis, alongside the CEO of Prince George’s County Schools, Dr. Monica Goldson, and Prince George’s County Board of Education Chair, Dr. Alvin Thornton, on Maryland Senate Bill 1000/House Bill 1300, proposed legislation to implement the Blueprint for Maryland's Future, and Kirwan Commission recommendations.


COUNTY COUNCIL HONORS BLACK HISTORY MONTH - “PRINCE GEORGE’S PROUD; ROOTS TO ROYALTY”

Black History

In observance of Black History Month 2020, the Prince George’s County Council hosted “Prince George’s Proud – Roots to Royalty,” on Wednesday, February 19th, in the Council Hearing Room.  The event featured Prince George’s County Executive Angela D. DISTRICT 8 COUNCIL MEMBER MONIQUE ANDERSON-WALKER SIGNS CENSUS 2020 PLEDGE

Census Pledge

Council Member Monique Anderson-Walker and her District 8 Team have formally pledged to complete their Census 2020 forms when arrive.   They are also volunteering as ambassadors to make sure every Prince George’s County resident, especially those in District 8, is counted in Census 2020.  Census information will also be available at all Council District 8 events, including the upcoming “Moments with Monique,” on Sunday, February 23rd, at Harmony Hall, and the Joint Transforming Communities meeting at Oxon Hill High School on Wednesday, February 26th.    Wherever you live in Prince George’s County, please make sure you, your family, neighbors, and friends are counted.

Census

Census Day is April 1, 2020.  However, households will receive an invitation to respond online or by phone as early as March 12, 2020.  Participating in the Census is safe, easy, and important.
