PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY COUNCIL ELECTS LEADERSHIP TEAM FOR LEGISLATIVE YEAR 2020
 The Prince George’s County Council unanimously reelected Council Member Todd M. Turner (D) - District 4 to serve a second consecutive year as Council Chair. At-Large Council Member Calvin S. Hawkins, II, was also unanimously elected to serve as Council Vice-Chair. The newly-confirmed Council leadership team presided over the first session of Legislative Year 2020 on Tuesday, December 3, 2019.  The new Legislative Year 2020 Council Leadership Team, Chair Todd M. Turner and Vice-Chair Calvin S. Hawkins, II, was acknowledged by Prince George’s County Executive Angela D. Alsobrooks, “Congratulations to County Council Chair Todd Turner on his re-election as Chair, and to Council Member Calvin Hawkins on his election as Council Vice-Chair. I look forward to working with both of you and the entire County Council in 2020 as we continue to make progress for our residents.”

COUNCIL CHAIR TURNER ANNOUNCES COMMITTEE ASSIGNMENTS FOR LEGISLATIVE YEAR 2020
Prince George’s County Council Chair Todd M. Turner (D) – District 4, has announced Legislative Year 2020 Council committee assignments and appointments to County boards and commissions. The Council voted in July 2018 to amend its Rules of Procedure, allowing for a restructuring of Council standing committees.
Council Chair Turner noted, “This past year we experienced our new committee structure with a new County Council. As we begin the second year of our term, we look to expand opportunities for leadership development among Council members while maintaining the important budgetary and legislative work of the Council’s committees in 2020.” READ the full press release. COUNCIL MEMBERS PARTICIPATE IN MARYLAND ASSOCIATION OF COUNTIES 2019 WINTER CONFERENCE
 Prince George’s County Council Members joined nearly 700 government leaders and legislators participating in this week’s Maryland Association of Counties (MACo) Winter Conference, December 4-6, in Cambridge, Maryland. Leading into the 2020 Maryland General Assembly Session, the conference discussed the fiscal and policy realities of the upcoming year and beyond. Agenda items also included a focus on school construction and education funding, solar siting, land use, cannabis, traffic safety planning, and much more. Below are some highlights:
Prince George's County Council Chair Todd M. Turner moderated a panel discussion on traffic congestion throughout the state of Maryland.
With new plans and projects being revealed every year, Chair Turner discussed transportation alternatives and what the future holds. Panelists discussed transit options and solutions such as telework, bikes, complete streets, and mass transit.

District 2 Council Member Deni Taveras addressed the “2020 Census: The Foundation of our Future,” session. A Diversity Caucus board member, she also served as the keynote speaker for the Diversity Caucus reception.

District 8 Council Member Monique Anderson-Walker presented #DrivingItHome as a panelist during for the "No More Deaths: Vision Zero and Maryland's Mission for Roadway Safety" conference session.

At-Large Council Member Mel Franklin led an interactive town hall discussion about the Kirwan Commission State and Local Education Funding Recommendations, during the MACo Winter Conference Large County Coalition LCC) luncheon. The Kirwan recommendations would mandate significant new commitments from local jurisdictions in addition to new state funding. Council Member Franklin chairs the LCC, which is comprised of the state's largest jurisdictions.

AT-LARGE COUNCIL MEMBER CALVIN S. HAWKINS, II HOSTS COMMUNITY DISCUSSION ON KIRWAN COMMISSION AND EDUCATION FUNDING
 Council Vice-Chair and At-Large Council Member Calvin S. Hawkins, II hosted the first event in his “Conversations with Calvin: Kirwan Commission Edition,” a countywide discussion series, on Thursday, December 5th at the Kentland Community Center in Landover. The “Conversations with Calvin: Kirwan Commission Edition" series is also scheduled for Saturday, December 7th at the Laurel Library, and Thursday December 12th, at the Southern Regional Technology and Recreation Complex in Fort Washington. Board of Education Chair, Dr. Alvin Thornton is a featured guest for all three meetings focusing on recommendations for education funding.
