COUNCIL HOSTS ‘MEET AND GREET’ WITH U.S. SENATOR BEN CARDIN FOR MARYLAND
 The County Council welcomed U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D – MD) to Upper Marlboro on Monday, May 6th, for an informal ‘Meet and Greet.
“Prince George’s County officials are focused on finding the right balance of policies that will keep the county on the upswing economically and provide the safety and conveniences neighborhoods all corners of the county deserve. I was proud to sit down with so many of the council members this week to get a better understanding of how I can best support the federal projects that will support the people of Prince George’s County,” Senator Cardin said.
Council Chair Todd M. Turner thanked Senator Cardin for providing updates on important issues, and addressing questions and comments from Council Members, “My colleagues and I appreciate Senator Cardin’s powerful leadership on Capitol Hill, and his hard work and strong advocacy on behalf of Prince Georgians, Marylanders and Americans. DISTRICT COUNCIL CONVENES ON LAND-USE MATTERS
The County Council, sitting as the District Council, is granted authority to act on zoning matters by the State of Maryland Regional District Act, now known as Article 28 of the Maryland Annotated Code. GOVERNMENT OPERATIONS AND FISCAL MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE HOLDS TWO BUDGET WORK SESSIONS THIS WEEK
The Council’s Government Operations and Fiscal Management (GOFP) committee, chaired by Council Member Derrick Leon Davis, met Monday, May 6th, to review proposed budgets for the County’s Office of Information Technology, with Acting Director Shelby Henderson; Board of Elections, with Administrator Alisha Alexander; Board of License Commissioners, with Kelly Markomanolakis and Terrence Sheppard; and the Office of Community Relations, with Director Euniesha R. Davis.

COUNCIL HOSTS ‘MEET AND GREET’ WITH COUNTY’S VOLUNTEER FIRE AND RESCUE
 The County Council hosted an informal ‘Meet and Greet’ with the Prince George’s County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association President Mark A Trader, and Association Officers and Members, on Tuesday, April 7th. The Prince George's County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association, which works closely with the Prince George's County Fire Department and the County Fire Commission, represents 38 volunteer fire and rescue corporations in the County to provide dedicated and continuous fire, rescue and EMS service to more than 900,000 citizens bordering our nation’s capital. PLANNING, HOUSING AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE MEETS IN BUDGET WORK SESSION

The Council’s Planning, Housing and Economic Development (PHED) committee, chaired by Council Member Dannielle M. Glaros, met on Tuesday, May 7th to consider proposed zoning legislation: CB-018-2019, CB-019-2019, CB-009-2019, and CB-010-2019.

 COUNTY COUNCIL CONVENES LEGISLATIVE SESSION
The Prince George’s County Council convened in Legislative Session on Tuesday, May 7th, approving a proposed letter to the Honorable Nancy Navarro, President, Montgomery County Council, transmitting the Prince George’s County Council’s proposed recommendations on the Fiscal Year (FY) 2020 Operating and Capital Bi-County Budgets for the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC), the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), and the Washington Suburban Transit Commission (WSTC). Council Members also held several public hearings on legislation and adopted CR-033-20199, urging the State Board of Public Works to require an Environmental Impact Statement, greater oversight and local approval before any contracts greater than $500 million are signed, and CR-032-2019, declaring the Council’s opposition to any expansion of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway or any proposal to transfer the BW Parkway from the National Park Service. COUNCIL CONFIRMS APPOINTMENTS TO COUNTY’S COMMISSION FOR WOMEN
 The Council congratulates all the newly-confirmed members of the County's Commission for Women - Denise C. McCain, Judith F. Davis, Cassandra Freeman, Robbie W. Terry, Shantelle E. Coleman, Sharon J. Smith, Deborah C. Wilder, Judy Mickens-Murray, Beatrice M. Rodgers, Lanta Evans and Carolyn White Washington. All were confirmed unanimously by the County Council during Council Session on Tuesday, May 7th.
MORE THAN 100 RESIDENTS TESTIFY DURING COUNCIL’S FINAL FY 2020 BUDGET PUBLIC HEARING
 The County Council held an FY 2020 Budget Public Hearing on the evening of Tuesday, May 7th, in the Council Hearing Room in Upper Marlboro. More than 100 residents shared their budget concerns and priorities regarding the County’s proposed Operating Budget, Six-Year Capital Program (including the Capital Improvement Budget), and the Prince George’s County Board of Education portion of the County’s FY 2020 Operating Budget, Proposed Budget of the Redevelopment Authority, Revenue Authority and Industrial Development Authority of Prince George’s County, and the Constant Yield Rate. COMMITTEE OF THE WHOLE CONDUCTS BUDGET WORK SESSION
The Council’s Committee of Whole met on Wednesday, May 8th, to conduct a budget work session for the proposed FY 2020 Board of Education Operating and Capital Improvement Program budgets. The COW reviewed the proposed spending plans for school construction with Interim Schools CEO, Dr. Monica Goldson and her budget team.

The Prince George’s County Council joins County Executive Angela D. Alsobrooks in celebration of the exciting news that all three of the Wall Street financial rating agencies – Moody’s, Fitch and Standard and Poor’s – have maintained the County’s Triple-A Bond Rating.
This top credit rating for Prince George’s County is a testament to our balanced fiscal management. It also affirms the fiscal planning set forth for the County, the successful collaboration between County Executive Alsobrooks and this Council, and our responsible stewardship over County resources, focusing on greater efficiency, oversight, and accountability in government.
We are proud that Wall Street rates the County’s financial and economic outlook at such a superior level of fiscal responsibility. The Council remains committed to the collaborative and progressive work we have achieved together, and a thriving, sustainable financial future.

PRINCE GEORGE'S AND MONTGOMERY COUNTY COUNCILS ADOPT FY 2020 BI-COUNTY
 Prince George’s and Montgomery County lawmakers, convening their annual Bi-County Budget meeting on Thursday, May 9th, unanimously adopted the FY 2020 budgets for the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC); the bi-county portion of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC); and the Washington Suburban Transit Commission (WSTC). Prince George’s County Council Members joined County Executive Angela D. Alsobrooks, other elected officials, and community leaders, on Thursday, May 9th, at the Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute in College Park, for the Fire Ops 101 Program sponsored by the International Association of Fire Fighters, in partnership with the Prince George’s County Fire and EMS Department, Montgomery County Department of Fire and Rescue Services, and the City of Annapolis Fire Department. The six-hour program provided a hands-on opportunity to better understand the challenges our firefighters and paramedics face daily.
COUNCIL MEMBERS AND GROWING GREEN WITH PRIDE #PRINCEGEORGESPROUD
 County Council Members teamed with County Executive Angela D. Alsobrooks and residents from communities across the County for a weekend “Growing Green with Pride” clean-up and beautification initiative. The cleanup was followed by a free celebration with food, prizes and entertainment at Watkins Regional Park. The Council thanks all those who participated and demonstrated their “Pride” in Prince George’s County!
