Regionalism At Work
Greetings District 6 Residents, Businesses and Stakeholders,
This January, I was given the honor of serving another term as Co-Vice Chair of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments' Board of Directors.
The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) is an independent, nonprofit association that brings area leaders together to address major regional issues in the District of Columbia, suburban Maryland and Northern Virginia. COG’s membership is comprised of 300 elected officials from 22 local governments, the Maryland and Virginia state legislatures, and U.S. Congress.
It is a very exciting time to serve in this capacity, as the County continues to grow and thrive in topical areas that drive the policy discussions held within COG: transit, development, housing, health and human services; discussions that are also being held on the County level through our Council's committee work and Board of Health discussions which drive the crux of our work as a legislative body.
As always, we are available to address your needs via telephone (301-952-3426) or email at councildistrict6@co.pg.md.us.
Committed to Service, Committed to You!

A Win, Win For All:
Regional Conversation with Amazon
On February 22, 2019, the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments hosted a gathering of more than 100 area leaders—representatives from local governments, businesses, nonprofits, and civic associations—for a regional conversation with Amazon on its plans to locate its new headquarters in Arlington. The conversation featured a guest panel, including Holly Sullivan, Amazon’s Director of Worldwide Economic Development, that discussed and took questions on a variety of topics, including incentives and Amazon’s economic impacts, the headquarters development, job creation and workforce development, and the company’s approach to working with the community on housing, transportation, and sustainability. Amazon HQ2 is a win not only for Crystal City but for the Metropolitan Washington region. We can attribute approximately 25,000 job opportunities largely due to our transit and transportation investments; investments in our regional systems of education, comprehensive housing opportunities and a highly evolved, vibrant nightlife. Addressing the Region's
Capacity for Additional Housing
As the region's workforce continues to grow, there is the need to meet the growing demand for housing as well. Based on a recent analysis by the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board (TPB), the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (MWCOG) has determined that a regional commitment to increasing the number of new housing units beyond those which are currently planned to maintain economic competitiveness and support transportation performance. The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (MWCOG) Housing and Planning Directors have met to discuss the various opportunities and challenges in producing additional homes to balance job and household growth, location and affordability and transportation investments. On the county level, these discussions have taken place through the implementation of the Comprehensive Housing Strategy, designed to represent the County’s ten‐year plan to serve the housing needs of all county residents, both current and future, while expanding access to opportunity through housing investments. The strategy looks to achieve three primary goals: support existing residents, including long‐time residents, seniors, residents with disabilities, and residents at‐risk of displacement; attract new residents, including millennials, employers, and developers; build on strategic investments & submarket conditions, including transit‐oriented development (TOD) areas like the Purple Line Corridor, areas around strategic assets and major public investments, and federal Opportunity Zones. The goal of increasing the region's housing supply cannot be achieved solely by government. It will take the work of our partners in the public and private sector to address the many facets of our housing challenges.
