GENERAL ASSEMBLY COMMITTEE MEETS ON PROPOSED STATE LEGISLATION
The Council’s General Assembly Committee, chaired by Council Vice-Chair Rodney C. Streeter, met Tuesday, February 5 to discuss bills under consideration in the 2019 Maryland General Assembly Session that have potential impact on Prince George’s County, including proposed legislation focused on education and law enforcement.

Our community is deeply saddened over the heartbreaking loss of five children, ages 5 to 15, in a tragic traffic accident on Route 301 in Bowie, early Saturday morning.

COUNTY COUNCIL APPROVES LETTERS; RECEIVES BRIEFING DURING TUESDAY SESSION
The Prince George’s County Council convened Tuesday, February 5th. Council Members approved a letter to the Honorable Joanne C. Benson, Chair, Prince George's County Senate Delegation and the Honorable Michael A. Jackson, Chair, Prince George's County House Delegation transmitting the position of the Prince George's County Council on proposed State legislation as the bills are currently drafted. The Council also approved the Council Chair’s signature on a Joint Signature Letter to the Maryland Department of Transportation Secretary regarding 2018 Priority Projects List for the FY 2019-2024 State Consolidated Transportation Program (CTP), following discussion in the Council’s Committee of the Whole meeting, also held Tuesday. County Executive Angela Alsobrooks signed the Joint Letter as well. Before recessing, the Council received a briefing, Prince George’s Rising: Strategies for Equitable Development and Prosperity, presented by the Prince George's County Social Innovation Fund & CEO, Inncuvate Consulting, Inc.

HEALTH, HUMAN SERVICES AND PUBLIC SAFETY COMMITTEE RECEIVES UPDATES FROM THE STATE’S ATTORNEY AND DIRECTOR OF THE OFFICE OF HOMELAND SECURITY
The Health, Human Services and Public Safety (HHSPS) Committee, chaired by Council Member At-Large, Calvin S. Hawkins, II, met Wednesday morning, February 6. In keeping with the Council’s oversight role, and after receiving a mid-year report from the Office of Audits and Investigations, HHSPS committee members were briefed by The Honorable Aisha N. Braveboy, regarding the Office of the State’s Attorney, and also by Office of Homeland Security Director Gevonia Whittington.

EDUCATION AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE WELCOMES INTERIM COUNTY SCHOOLS CEO AND BOARD OF EDUCATION LEADERSHIP FOR PUBLIC SCHOOLS OVERVIEW
The Education and Workforce Development (EWD) Committee, chaired by District 9 Council Member Sydney J. Harrison, met Wednesday afternoon, February 6. Committee members received an Overview of Prince George’s County Public Schools and a preliminary FY 2020 Budget review presented by Interim Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Monica Goldson. Board of Education Chair, Dr. Alvin Thornton, and Vice-Chair Edward Burroughs, III also participated in the meeting. Due to a lengthy discussion, the planned Performance Audit Update (Continuous Business Improvement Study) was postponed and will appear on a later agenda.

PLANNING, HOUSING AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE RECEIVES HOUSING BRIEFINGS
The Planning, Housing and Economic Development (PHED) Committee, chaired by District 3 Council Member Dannielle Glaros, met Thursday morning, February 7, to consider CB-001-2019, a proposed amendment to the Zoning Ordinance. PHED committee members received a Comprehensive Housing Strategy presentation, provided by Estella Alexander, Acting Director of the Department of Housing and Community Development and Enterprise Community Partners, Inc. The PHED committee also received an Overview and Updates briefing on the Department of Housing and Community Development, the Redevelopment Authority of Prince George’s County, the County’s Housing Authority, and the Affordable Housing Commission.
