DISTRICT COUNCIL CONVENES ON ZONING MATTERS

County Council Members, meeting as the District Council, convened Monday to review zoning matters.  The County Council, sitting as the District Council, is granted authority to act on zoning matters by the State of Maryland Regional District Act, now known as Article 28 of the Maryland Annotated Code.

COUNTY COUNCIL PRESENTS A HOST OF PROCLAMATIONS

The County Council presented several proclamations on Tuesday, official declarations recognizing individuals, businesses, organizations or events living or working in Prince George’s County. The month of October is set aside as a time to heighten both Breast Cancer Awareness and Domestic Violence Awareness.  The Council and County Executive presented a joint proclamation to Dr. Regina Hampton, Co-Founder, and Medical Director of the Breast Care Center at Doctors Community Hospital, recognizing her “Exemplary Leadership in Breast Care” in Prince George’s County.  Council Chair Dannielle M. Glaros and Council Member Derrick Leon Davis also presented a proclamation to Director of the Prince George’s County Family Justice Center Denise McCain, recognizing “Domestic Violence Awareness Month” in the County.  Council proclamations were also presented to Prince George’s Community College president, Dr. Charlene Dukes, for her honor as the “2018 Association of Community College Trustees Regional Chief Executive Officer Northeast Region Award Recipient” in Prince George’s County; and recognizing Jennifer Lucas as the 2018 “SPG/BPW Woman of the Year” in the County.   The week of October 6 -12, 2018 was recognized by the Council as “Prince George’s County Nonprofit Week; and the week of October 15-19, 2018 was acknowledged as “Business Women’s Week,” with proclamations. And, on a lighter note, Council Chair Dannielle M. Glaros and Vice Chair Todd Turner presented a proclamation to Marcus Copeland, who achieved top honors in the “Guinness Book of World Records” for the number of push-ups he did in one hour!

COUNCIL CONVENES LEGISLATIVE SESSION; CHAIR THANKS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE GRANT AWARDEES

After opening the Council session, Chair Glaros celebrated the work through the Fiscal Year 2018 County Council Domestic Violence Grant awards, including successes in housing, prevention, counseling and advocacy.  She expressed the Council’s appreciation for grant awardees and all nonprofits working tirelessly to support families and save lives.

Council Members reviewed several pieces of legislation meeting as Committee of the Whole and s the County Council.  The Council voted to transmit the Joint Letter from the Council and County Executive to the Interagency Committee on School Construction, endorsing the Prince George’s County Board of Education’s proposed FY-2020 Capital Budget request and identify the projects considered most critical.

Three resolutions were passed as a part of the Council’s initiative to incentivize high-quality, multi-family residential development and retail in the County.   CR-77-2018 approves a Payment In Lieu of Taxes (PILOT) to support the redevelopment of a site in the Gateway Redevelopment District located on Baltimore Avenue, Hartwick Drive and Guilford Drive in College Park.  CR-78-2018 designates the boundaries of Largo Town Center Downtown and Regional Transit District. CR-80-2018 affirms the boundaries of the Oxon Hill Local Neighborhood Center, as designated within the current 2014 General Plan for the physical development of land in the County.

COUNCIL ANNOUNCES FY 2019 DOMESTIC VIOLENCE GRANT RECIPIENTS

Grant Program Seeks Community Solutions for Ending Domestic Violence in the County

The Prince George’s County Council, in an initiative combatting domestic violence and related abuse in the County, announced recipients of the Council’s FY 2019 Domestic Violence Grant funding following a proclamation ceremony recognizing October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month on Tuesday, October 16, 2018 in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.  

The Prince George’s County Council appropriated $500,000 in FY 2019 in a third round of grant funding to support the Council’s Domestic Violence Grant Program, a funding resource for programs that serve the housing, counseling, or advocacy needs of County residents who are victims of domestic violence.  Grant funds are available to nonprofit organizations through a review and evaluation process for all applicants.

Council Chair Dannielle Glaros (D) – District, 3 stressed the importance of ongoing collaboration between nonprofits and government to effectively address the scourge of domestic violence.

 “This Council appreciates the work of our awardees and all nonprofits working tirelessly to support our families and save lives. We continue to focus on strengthening our communities with solutions and partnerships to address the scourge of domestic violence in Prince George’s County.”

DISTRICT 6 COUNCIL MEMBER DERRICK LEON DAVIS RECEIVES 2018 PHYLLIS CAMPBELL NEWSOME PUBLIC POLICY LEADERSHIP AWARD

Council Member Derrick Leon Davis was the recipient of the Phyllis Campbell Newsome Public Policy Leadership Award, named in honor of the Center for Nonprofit Advancement’s former director of advocacy and community relations after her untimely passing in 2003. The award was created to highlight the work of elected and non-elected officials who have gone above and beyond in partnership with the nonprofit sector to ensure more vibrant communities.

Upon receiving the award, Council Member Davis said, “I am richly privileged to receive this award from The Center for Nonprofit Advancement, which supports so many through its- life-changing work, while serving as a keeper of the legacy of the late Phyllis Campbell Newsome.  It has been said that we should be ashamed to die until we have won some victory for humanity.  And so, we live, attempting to do as Phyllis Campbell Newsome did in her lifetime - using our gifts, talents, skills and abilities to improve the quality of life for our residents and promote positive change.  We should all aspire to this legacy of giving and helping others.”

Each year, the Center honors four public officials with this award. One official is recognized from each of the jurisdictions the Center supports including, the District of Columbia, Northern Virginia, and Montgomery and Prince George’s counties.
